THIS IS AN UNPAID-VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Online applications are being accepted for California POST Certified Reserve Police Officers who have completed Levels I and/or II of the Reserve Peace Officer Program.

This recruitment will remain open until sufficient qualified applications are received and may close without prior notice.

The City of Cathedral City is seeking enthusiastic women and men interested in pursuing a career in Public Safety. Under general supervision, a Reserve Police Officer performs tasks and duties related to the protection of public health, safety and welfare, and enforcement of applicable state and local laws; provides traffic enforcement and control; caries out special assignments in a phase of police work; performs other related duties as required under the supervision of a sworn Police Officer or higher-ranking officer.

Cathedral City Reserve Police Unit was established to supplement and assist regular sworn police officers in their duties. This unit provides professional, sworn volunteer Reserve Police Officers who can augment regular police staffing levels.

COMPENSATION FOR RESERVE POLICE OFFICERS

Compensation for Reserve Police Officers is provided in the form of a stipend. All Reserve Police Officer appointees are issued a firearm and designated safety equipment. Reserve Police Officers receive an annual uniform allowance of $350 when requirements have been met.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Patrols assigned areas by car, bicycle or on foot; performs crime suppression and prevention activities; answer special calls; assists in conducting initial and follow-up investigation; assists in the interview of victims and witnesses; resolves complaints, including domestic disturbances, health code, and local ordinance violations; performs surveillance activities; investigate suspicious circumstances.

  • Enforces traffic laws; controls and directs traffic when necessary; performs crowd control; operates handheld and stationary radar devices; assists in crime prevention activities; issues citations and makes arrest; transports, books, and secures, directly or indirectly, the care and custody of detained persons.

  • Takes written statements; prepares the required report; testifies in court in connection with prosecution of offenders; conducts property and building checks for burglary and other criminal activity; responds to questions, concerns , and request for service from the public; provides information as appropriate to resolve complaints; contacts and cooperates other law enforcement agencies as warranted.

  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies and associates, City Management staff, and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship

  • At least 21 years of age

  • Must have completed the POST Regular Basic Course in either Standard Format - Intensive or extended, or the Modular Format - Level I or Level II Reserve training

BACKGROUND DISQUALIFIERS:

  • An adult felony conviction in California, or with a conviction for an offense in another state which would be classified as a felony in California

  • Currently on Probation or Parole

  • Adult felony and/or misdemeanor conviction(s) may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and how recent

  • Conviction of/or sustained petitions for any sex crime

  • Recent use and/or possession of illegal drugs, weapons or explosive devices without legal authorization

  • History of committing domestic violence or animal cruelty

  • Dishonesty or failure to reveal pertinent information

Adult Use of Marijuana Act (Proposition 64) and California POST Selection Standards:

Since POST standards adhere to both state and federal laws, the possession and/or sale of marijuana remains prohibited by federal law under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Therefore, any candidate who uses / possesses and/or the sale of marijuana within the last year will result in disqualification.

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS

Based upon the information presented in the application, a limited number of candidates who possess qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process.

The selection process will consist of the following:

ORAL INTERVIEW:Qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview to evaluate their experience, education and personal fitness for the position.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:Candidates who are successful in the examination process will be subjected to a comprehensive background investigation to include a polygraph examination.

MEDICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS:Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation and are conditionally offered a position would be required to successfully complete an extensive medical and psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
