This posting will fill two (2) positions – 60022540 and 60022531. You only need to apply once to be considered for any of the positions.
These positions are located in the Division 12 Roadside Environmental Unit. One of the positions will be based out of the Catawba County Roadside Environmental Unit and one position will be based out of the Cleveland County Roadside Environmental Unit. Position is an Engineering Technician I in the Roadside Environmental Unit in Division 12. The unit provides a comprehensive vegetation management program consisting of turf grass management, erosion control, seeding and mulching, herbicide and pesticide applications, roadside mowing, long arm slope mowing, landscape beautification plantings and maintenance, wildflower establishment, rest area operations and maintenance, storm water compliance program and selective vegetation removal permitting. Main responsibilities for this position include inspection of contract grass mowing, long arm slope mowing, litter removal, and other roadside maintenance operations throughout the various counties within the division. This position is also responsible for federally funded contract landscape enhancement projects. Position will assist with Winter Weather operations in the division. Maintenance operations at Rest Areas may be required. This position is responsible for ensuring all work performed on NCDOT Right-of-Way is performed according to standard procedures in a safe manner.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
Experience in vegetation management such as grass mowing, guardrail trimming, tree removal and plant bed maintenance
Experience in contract inspection in accordance with NCDOT Standards
Experience in record keeping in accordance with NCDOT Standards
Knowledge of MUTCD Standards and work zone set up
Experience in communicating effectively with contractors and general public
Additional Expectations:
Ability to conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes and specifications. Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in inspection of various contracts including right of way mowing, enhancement plantings, plant bed maintenance, litter removal, stormwater maintenance, and various other maintenance operations. General knowledge of state and/or federal rules and regulations to determine compliance. General knowledge and skill in the use of equipment and software used for inspection. Ability to maintain standard records both physically and electronically. Ability to effectively use verbal and nonverbal skills to express routine or simple technical and /or program concepts and related facts in a clear, concise, organized manner. Night and weekend work assignments are possible. May be required to verbally communicate with the general public. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. North Carolina Pesticide Applicator's License is required within 60 days of hire. Safety toe shoes are needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an
appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
