Description of Work

This position is located in Caswell County in the Equipment Shop. This position supervises a group of mechanics and other semi-skilled and skilled trades personnel that performs small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment mechanic work. This position is responsible for determining the type and extent of repair work to be completed and scheduling vehicles and equipment for service and / or repair. Work also includes making repair assignments and determining the extent of any additional repair work to be done. This position instructs technicians in difficult repair assignments; inspects work upon completion to determine that necessary repairs have been made and that vehicles and/or equipment are in proper operating condition. Employee prepares work reports on maintenance and repair work completed, submits requisitions for needed materials, purchases emergency supplies as needed to make necessary repairs, and maintains and supervises the maintenance of stock records.

  • Experience using SAP to create, manage, and close repair orders.

  • Experience in inventory management including parts, fuel, and lube commodities.

  • Experience working with internal customers and outside vendors to complete daily work activities.

  • Knowledge of the proper tools and equipment needed to successfully operate a fleet repair and maintenance facility.

  • Experience in applying best practices as it relates to housekeeping techniques, needed to maintain a vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance facility.

Additional Expectations:

This position requires one to have the ability to develop plans to accomplish work operation and objectives and the ability to arrange and assign work to use resources efficiently. The candidate must communicate information to individuals or groups clearly and concisely. They must also convey written information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and message. This position requires one to listen and respond appropriately to others as well as establishing expectations and clear direction to meet goals and objectives of ongoing work for a group of employees. The candidate will observe and assess work, provide feedback, establish a culture of safety for employees and ensure that work processes are free from safety and health hazards, and make sure employees are properly trained. They will diagnose problems with equipment and confirm that proper repairs are being made. The candidate will be responsible for written reports. A valid driver’s license is required. Ability to operate a state vehicle.

The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Safety toe footwear is needed for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of progressive experience in the repair of vehicles and/or equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
