UNUM Mainframe Infrastructure Engineer in Carlow, Ireland

Our team is responsible for internal development, management and maintenance of infrastructure that supports all our applications at Unum.

This opportunity is on our Mainframe Infrastructure team who delivers a reliable and stable platform with vast transaction processing to meet our business and customer needs. The role will be responsible for the analysis, development, modification, installation, testing and maintenance of System Automation & Omegamon Components on z/OS (z/Service Management Suite).

We are looking for an Engineer with Mainframe skills to collaborate with cross functional stakeholders and deliver on installation, configuration, maintenance and monitoring across a range of infrastructure technologies and platforms. This role will provide direction and technical solutions for leveraging existing and future technologies to create business value, while working with and mentoring junior Engineers

The Role

  • Daily/BAU – the below ability/skillset is a requirement for this role:

  • Develop, modify, install & prepare Mainframe system automation routines.

  • Customize System Automation MATs, Omega on components. Apply maintenance to DEV/PRD for SA/Omegamon

  • Code Net View PIPE’s/REXX, JCL

  • Diagnose, isolate, debug problems/issues and perform problem resolution.

  • Ability to automate processing of z/OS components and batch workload.

  • Integrate with IBM Z Operations Analytics to reduce the time for problem isolation and resolution.

  • Provision of documentation & training for Command Center Operations staff.

  • Defines, implements, and manages the relevant infrastructure technologies.

  • Review infrastructure security holes, applies patches, create console roles and reviews, and creates and installs security packs as required

  • Mentor junior engineers and transfers knowledge via training, documentation and on the job escalations

  • Participates in strategic and tactical planning sessions, providing timely and accurate estimates for deliverables.

  • Develops monitoring, dashboards, escalations, and alerts with ability to resolve system problems.

  • Follows incident management and change management processes, creating runbooks.

  • Identifies opportunities and assist with scalable solutions for future implementation and automation.

  • Participates in on-call rotations for emergency events and escalations, assisting to remediate issues

  • Strong communication with the ability to tailor language to various levels of the organization including business and leadership on effective and efficient solutions

  • Ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment, delivering on multiple projects with various stakeholders.

  • Strong critical thinking to recommend, implement and deliver technical solutions.

What You Offer

  • Bachelors Degree preferred, and/or equivalent experience.

  • 4 + years experience with strong infrastructure background.

  • Ability to write script and use other applications/tools and must be able to System Automation & Omegamon Components on z/OS.

  • Agile development/methodologies preferred.

Mainframe Tools

  • Working knowledge and skills with the standard z/OS tools: TSO/ISPF, JCL, VSAM Utilities, SDSF, SYSLOG, IEBCOPY, DFSMS, IMS, DB2 etc.

  • Specific skills are ability to code JCL, ability to use TSO/ISPF panels to edit and maintain PDS libraries, prepare JCL, submit JCL and examine results. Db2 and or IMS knowledge and experience with recover, back up, diagnostic, and other utilities.

  • Knowledge of SMP/E (commands, terminology, problem determination). Ability to use SMP/E to apply maintenance, perform installs, and maintain SMP/E environments.

  • End to end knowledge of batch processing and issue resolution.
