M & J Explosives, LLC Drill Operator in Carlisle, Pennsylvania
Overall responsibility Provide safe and quality drilling services to exceed customer requirements.
Key areas of responsibility
- Select and attach drill bits and drill rods, adding more rods as hole depths increase, and changing drill bits as needed.
- Perform routine maintenance and upgrade work on machines and equipment, such as replacing parts, building up drill bits, and lubricating machinery.
- Operate controls to stabilize machines and to position and align drills.
- Regulate air pressure, rotary speed, and downward pressure, according to the type of rock or concrete being drilled.
- Operate machines to flush earth cuttings or to blow dust from holes.
- Drill or bore holes in rock for blasting, grouting, anchoring, or building foundations.
- Verify depths and alignments of boring positions.
- Start, stop, and control drilling speed of machines and insertion of casings into holes.
- Record drilling progress and geological data.
- Drive drill support trucks to and from work sites.
- Select the appropriate drill for the job, using knowledge of rock or soil conditions.
- Monitor drilling operations, checking gauges and listening to equipment to assess drilling conditions and to determine the need to adjust drilling or alter equipment.
- Retrieve lost equipment from bore holes, using retrieval tools and equipment.
- Document geological formations encountered during work.
Safety, Health, Environment
- Alerts management immediately about any safety concerns, illness, injuries or environmental incidents
- Participates in safety meetings and trainings regularly.
- Full understanding of all vehicle safety procedures.
- Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment, wear and maintain all PPE according to manufacture recommendations.
- Learn and follow all SH&E requirements related to the job.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times.
- Constantly review the workplace for hazards, which could leave to injury, illness or incident and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
- Address improper SH&E practices observed in co-workers including contractors.
- Look for opportunities to improve SH&E performance and actively participate in SH&E improvement activities.
- Comply with all regulatory requirements of the job and SH&E policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- 6 months relevant experience with similar position responsibilities.
- Knowledge of DOT, MSHA, ATF and OSHA regulations and procedures a plus.
- Experience working in a mining environment (MSHA certified) is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Work Environment involves being outside in all types of weather.
- Lifting up to 60 pounds.
- Carrying 55 pounds or more of product or other materials.
- Pushing/Pulling in working with equipment.
- Other Activities include frequent bending and squatting during preparation for shots.
