Essential Duties & Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  1. Demonstrates skill in preparing for assigned surgical procedures:

Consults with team members to identify individual patient needs

  1. Utilizes physician preference cards to check case carts and obtain appropriate instruments, equipment, suture, and supplies

  2. Utilizes available resources (e.g., experienced personnel, policy/procedure manuals, texts) to prepare for assignments

  3. Demonstrates resourcefulness when procedures are unusual or unfamiliar

  4. Collaborates with team members to improve/update preference cards or other resource information

  5. Prepares case set-up within an acceptable timeframe

  6. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves according to procedure

  7. Maintains strict aseptic technique

  8. Prioritizes set-up

  9. Completes set-up according to accepted standards; i.e., neat, organized, accurate.

  10. Conserves supplies and equipment

  11. Demonstrates skill in performing intraoperative scrub responsibilities:

Maintains strict aseptic technique throughout procedure

  1. Assists with appropriate prepping and draping according to procedure

  2. Maintains organized back table

  3. Anticipates the needs of the surgical team

  4. Demonstrates skill in the proper handling of instruments

  5. Consistently focuses attention on the surgical procedure

  6. Communicates with the team to promote smooth progression of the procedure

  7. Performs counts according to MAH policy/procedure

  8. Practices and promotes electro-surgical safety: adheres to policy/procedure

  9. Gives thorough, concise report at change of shift or whenever relieved from surgical procedure

  10. Conserves supplies and equipment: respects cost, environmental waste, and patient/personnel safety

  11. Respects patient's privacy

  12. Performs the scrub role for the following procedures representative of MAH Surgical Services case types:

  • Vascular:

Fem-pop bypass

AAA

Carotid

A-V Fistula

Vein ligations

Neuro:

Assists in preparing for CABG, MVR

  • Podiatry

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduate of an Operating room Technician Program, or equivalent preparation.

  2. One year of Operating Room experience preferred.

  3. Good interpersonal skills

  4. Must be C.O.R.T. certified or eligible.

Physical Requirements & Environment:

  1. Walks and stands up to 90% of their work time.

  2. Must be able to push and pull heavy weights (including patients) and lift 50 pounds.

  3. Exposure to trace anesthetic gases and other chemicals in the environment.

  4. Exposure to patient fluids and/or specimens throughout the work day.

  5. Use of power tools during surgery is required.

  6. Personal protective equipment is required, including eye protection, gowns, gloves, and surgical masks.

  7. Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation.

  8. Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed to prevent injuries to self
