COLLECTIONS ARCHIVIST, MIT Libraries, focuses on inclusive appraisal, acquisition, and stewardship of archival and manuscript collections at MIT; responsible for donor relationship management, deed of gift negotiations, collection surveying, and appraisal; supports diverse representation within the archives and collaborates closely with the Women@MIT Archivist and other stakeholders. The Archivist contributes to special projects like oral histories and digital initiatives, participates in collection audits, rights reviews, and access updates, and provides reference services to researchers. The position also involves outreach, engagement in professional activities, and emergency response for the Libraries' collections.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: master’s degree in archival studies from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree with archival certification; at least three years of experience in appraising and acquiring archival collections, along with expertise in archival content management systems (e.g., ArchivesSpace, CONTENTdm) and descriptive standards like DACS and EAD; robust communication skills and a proven ability to build and sustain relationships with donors, faculty, and staff; knowledge of issues such as confidentiality, intellectual property, and access rights; demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, manage multiple priorities, and commit to equity, diversity, and inclusion. PREFERRED: experience managing large archival projects, digital archives, emergency response, web archives, and oral histories, especially in academic settings; and Knowledge of records management.
