Posting Summary
Support international students and scholars during their time from the point of admission/invitation, through their studies and/or work experiences and during post-graduate work authorizations where applicable, to include advising on immigration requirements and how these may intersect with other aspects of their lives. Serve as general point of contact for students and scholars and supports them through direct advising, campus liaison work, and a range of programming. Maintain accurate immigration records for international students and scholars, including recording actions in SEVIS , maintaining internal databases, and processing student requests for actions on their immigration records. Serve as a Designated School Official ( DSO ) for UVM’s F-1 students. Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer ( ARO ) for UVM’s J-1 exchange visitors. Serves as member of the International Student, Scholar and Employee Services Team and reports to Associate Director of the Office of International Education.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
Bachelor’s degree and two years of full-time experience advising international students or scholars. Experience living or working abroad and/or extensive experience working with international populations in the United States. Ability to interpret federal regulations and apply knowledge to advising clients on status-related issues. Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity on US college campuses. Experience in organizing programs and events for university students or scholars. Ability to communicate effectively in individual advising and group presentations, including to non-native English speakers. Ability to communicate succinctly and clearly to distill complex issues in writing and in speaking. Ability to learn new computer applications required. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident per federal regulations to use SEVIS database.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience advising international students on F-1 or J-1 federal immigration matters. Direct experience advising students at the post-secondary level. Foreign language abilities are highly desirable, as is experience working with individuals for whom English is not a native language. Coursework related to human development, cross-cultural communication, and other related areas desirable.
Anticipated Pay Range $52,000-$57,000
Other Information
Special Conditions Bargaining unit position, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
