The role
This individual will be responsible for the overall management of the Boston and Lexington (MA) offices electrical groups including being the “go to” technical resource, QA/QC reviews, project staffing, training coordination with HR, new staff recruitment coordination with HR, interviewing and hiring new staff, participation in the weekly MA Offices “Monday Morning Meeting” to review Project Schedule updates as well as lead weekly MA Offices Electrical Group meeting(s).
This role provides an immediate seat in the AHA MA Senior Leadership Group as well as provides an excellent near-term opportunity to become an AHA Partner via AHA’s ongoing and successful “Path to Partnership” Plan which elevated nine current and future company leaders to Partners in 2021.
Essential Duties
The following skills and duties are necessary to perform the job successfully but are not all inclusive:
The Electrical Department Manager is responsible for providing technical guidance as well as managing the electrical staff who is responsible to design the electrical systems, power distribution, lighting and lighting controls, emergency power, UPS, and renewable energy systems, for the purpose of bidding and construction for various projects.
Provide technical guidance to Project Engineers, Design Engineers, and Designers working on various design tasks, such as the layout of electrical rooms, UPS rooms, Generator equipment yards, etc.
Stay up-to-date with appropriate relevant electrical and building codes and standards.
Perform electrical QA/QC project reviews per the AHA Project Schedule.
Manage the Boston and Lexington offices Electrical Group staffing.
Develop an electrical group training plan and coordinate the implementation with HR.
Develop an electrical group staffing/recruiting plan and coordinate implementation with HR.
Interviewing and/or overseeing the interviewing process for potential new hires.
Coordination of potential new hires offers with MA Managing Partner and Managing Directors as well as HR.
Coordination of new hire onboarding with MA Electrical Group and HR.
Perform annual performance reviews of MA Electrical Group staff.
Coordination of annual salary increases with MA Managing Partner and Managing Directors as well as HR.
Maintain and update AHA electrical details, specifications and standards.
Coordinate/communicate with other Department Managers regarding inter-discipline coordination and standards.
On a selective project basis, prepare a conceptual electrical scope of work written narrative report to initiate the “basis of design” direction.
On a selective project basis, attend meetings with owners, clients, or architects, as necessary to provide additional technical support for the AHA project manager and/or electrical design team.
Support MA Electrical Group from a technical support standpoint in review contractor submittals to determine conformance with plans, specifications, and codes.
Support MA Electrical Group and other AHA personnel to help resolve electrical system malfunctions, and provide technical direction.
Support MA Electrical Group in regards to system components or products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications.
Provide feedback to Project Engineers, Design Engineers and/or Designers on customer problems and needs.
Be active in professional associations and societies.
Research technical topics (continuing education are strongly encouraged).
Provide code research and evaluations.
Research non-routine code issues and obtain interpretations from code officials. Brief the electrical department and clients on findings and recommendations for compliance paths where applicable to specific projects.
On a selective basis, prepare technical reports detailing cause of damage / failure, damage observed, and test results.
Other Duties
Mentor senior engineers.
Keep updated with new technologies, changing building codes and industry trends / advances.
Review and apply Professional Registration Seal to all electrical and fire alarm drawings produced for AHA MA offices projects.
Qualifications (Required):
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (from an ABET accredited school).
PE license
Fifteen or more years of experience in MEP electrical engineering
Five + years leading and developing teams
Able to travel to sites when necessary (5-10%)
Understanding of current codes
Revit and AutoCAD experience
Analytical and problem-solving skills
Strong verbal, writing, and interpersonal skills
Computer skills (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). Proficiency in SKM Power Tools, preferred
Ambitious, self-motivated, hands-on, and team oriented
A desire to immediately step into Senior Leadership as well as near-term Partnership opportunity
Qualifications (Preferred):
PE license (various states)
LEED a plus
