QUALIFICATIONS: Any person employed as a teacher assistant, must hold one of the following credentials: temporary license, continuing certificate, or Level I, II, III or Para-Professional certificate. Since February 2, 2004, all teacher assistant candidates are required to take the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Tests ( ATAS ) unless the candidate took and achieved a qualifying score on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) which is a requirement for classroom teacher certification.   • Possess and maintain state and or federal certification

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Participate in professional learning opportunities as required

  • Skill in the care and supervision of students

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions

  • Ability to speak and write effectively

  • Working knowledge of the school environment and the population it serves

  • Awareness and ability to work successfully within a diverse population

    DUTIES: The role of teacher assistant is to provide direct instructional services to the students under the supervision of the principal and the direction of certified teachers who are responsible for the students’ instruction.

  • Working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects*

  • Providing the teacher with information about pupils that will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences*

  • Assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, and assisting in the development of appropriate learning experiences*

  • Utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in areas such as: foreign language, arts, crafts, music and similar projects*

  • Communicating effectively with the instructional team, including the classroom teacher, other professional staff and parents

  • Attending to the physical needs of the students, as appropriate

  • Assisting in related institutional work as required

    *New York State Commissioner Regulations, Section 80-5.6(b) APPOINTMENT: Appointments are subject to the review of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following the approval of the City of Buffalo Civil Service Division.
