Hours: 6:45pm to 7:00am

Summary:

The Labor and Delivery Registered Professional Nurse coordinates total nursing care for the patient (maternal/fetal unit) by assessing health data and analyzing the data to determine diagnosis. She/he identifies expected, individualized outcomes to develop a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain those outcomes. The nurse implements the interventions identified in the plan of care and evaluates the patients progress toward outcomes. The Labor and Delivery nurse has the ability to make contributions toward making the birthing experience positive and memorable for the woman and her significant others. The Labor and Delivery RN provides total care to his/her patient: assessment of maternal and fetal status, assisting provider at both vaginal and Caesarean delivery (scrub and circulate), provide indicated interventions during patient complications, providing care to the bereaved patient and her family.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program

  • BSN Preferred

  • Licensed to practice nursing in New York State

  • BLS

  • Effective January 2016, must attain ACLS certification within 1 year of assignment

  • Neonatal Resuscitation Certified during orientation to the department

  • AWHONN Fetal Monitoring validation within one (1) year of assignment

  • Effective January 1, 2016 must attain NCC Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification within one (1) year of assignment. After attainment of initial Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification, must recertify every three (3) years.

  • Perinatal Surgical Competency (scrub and circulate) within one (1) year of assignment.

  • One (1) year of acute care nursing experience

  • One (1) year of labor and delivery

If no applicants have one (1) year of acute care nursing experience and one (1) year of labor and delivery experience, the applicants meeting the following criteria will be considered next:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • The candidate requires good physical and mental health to meet the physical and emotional requirements of the position.

  • Physical activities include: lifting, stooping, constant walking.

  • Finger and hand dexterity and acute sensory faculties (visual acuity, aural acuity, and olfactory acuity) are required to appropriately assess changes in patient condition.

  • The ability to cope with stress is required. The role requires excellent judgement and the ability to utilize critical thinking skills to provide optimal patient care under rapidly changing conditions.

  • The RN directs a small group of employees performing similar or related tasks of a semi skilled nature.

  • Assigns, assesses performance and maintains efficiency of staff assigned to her/him.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The Labor and Delivery Registered nurse performs duties within the Maternal Child units on the Fourth floor of Mercy Hospital. (L&D,OR,PACU,Nursery,NICU,Mother/Baby units) Occasionally, the L&D RN will perform patient assessments in other units of the facility (ED, OR, PACU, ICU, General Medical Surgical units).
