WORK OBJECTIVE: Under the direction of the Director, HSEQ this position is responsible for the development and continued management of an authority wide sustainability program. The position shall work with the various internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with all regulatory aspects of sustainability.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such duties are a logical assignment to the position. • Developing and implementing comprehensive sustainability plans and initiatives. • Working closely with stakeholders to drive behavior change, engaging partners, support environmental justice initiatives, and facilitating compliance with internal and external sustainability and energy reduction goals. • Establish goals, collect data, and generate reports to represent the Authority’s compliance with applicable internal and external regulations. • Create educational tools, guidelines, workshops, and presentations. • Act as Sustainability Coordinator by interacting with internal and external entities including but not limited to federal and state regulatory agencies. • Manage the NFTA sustainability committee and projects through all stages of development while working with outside consulting and/or Authority personnel. • Leading internal working group to create program and NFTA policies on sustainable operations in areas such as waste and the adoption of zero emission equipment. • Collaborating with NFTA Grants and Development Department staff to support funding applications relating to the Authority’s core value of environmental stewardship and social responsibility. • Serving as Authority designated Sustainability Coordinator to local, state, and federal entities and committees. • Providing research and guidance on sustainable operations to the business unit’s, departments, and management team within the NFTA. • Leading employee sustainability training and creating outreach and marketing materials on the Department’s sustainability initiatives, such as social media content and email newsletters. • Ensuring the NFTA is complying with NFTA Policy, State Executive Orders, and government legislation. • Performs additional duties and tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Comprehensive knowledge and ability to interpret federal, state, & transportation specific sustainability and energy management goals and initiatives. Knowledge of sustainable operations projects and concepts in areas such as greenhouse gas emission reduction, energy transition, waste reduction, hazardous substance use reduction, green procurement, sustainable transportation, sustainable planning, and sustainable landscape management. Ability to work with diverse groups and to build effective partnerships. Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence and inspire individuals and teams at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated skills in gathering, analyzing, and evaluating data. Ability to build programs and implement strategies to achieve organizational goals. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and to work with changing priorities and schedules. Ability to capture knowledge and monitor evolving regulations, best practices, and trends in sustainability in order to implement within the Authority. Must exhibit initiative and take responsibility to address sustainability compliance. Must be well-informed and able to monitor compliance on all current and pending sustainability regulations. Ability to exercise tact and deal effectively with officials and employees, other jurisdictions, and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).

ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in usual office conditions and in the field. In the field, the incumbent may be exposed to extreme weather or accident scenes involving fire, chemical spills, and other potentially hazardous conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, science, engineering, architecture, business/public administration, urban planning, or a related field., plus a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in implementing and/or managing energy, environmental, or sustainability-related data analysis, program management, strategic planning, or other programs of similar scope and nature. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
