M&T Bank Associate Director – Treasury Accounting in Washington, District Of Columbia

Overview:

Provides accounting and advisory services to the treasury business line to support implementation of derivatives trading strategies, derivatives hedging strategies, investment strategies, funding strategies, including asset securitizations and other balance sheet optimization strategies. The position will require direct integration with Treasury Department personnel and report to the Director of Accounting Policy. As a liaison between the Treasury business and Accounting functions, the Associate Director will be a key contact and go to person.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research complex derivative and hedging, investment, and funding transactions, independently assess implications, determine appropriate accounting treatment, document conclusions, and manage the accounting implementation plan.

  • Analyze and independently substantiate daily, weekly, and monthly derivative and hedging results, understand and provide explanation of results, including reasons for volatility, to Controller and CFO on a monthly basis.

  • Oversee production of daily, weekly, and monthly P&L and position reports

  • Monitor new guidance issued by the FASB, SEC and Banking Regulators relating to issues that affect the Treasury function and assess impact to current processes.

  • Maintain a current level of expertise relating to professional standards and emerging industry and technical developments.

  • Assist in challenging new business initiatives to ensure they are aligned with business strategy and accounting guidance.

  • Work closely with Finance leaders, Treasury leaders, Legal Counsel and others as needed to provide guidance in the structuring of transactions.

  • Assist in establishing new processes, reviewing existing processes, and identifying enhancements, for example:

  • Daily production of P&L and explanation of changes

  • Break resolution processes

  • Improve manual reconciliation processes through automation and collaborating with IT to implement technology driven solutions

  • Continually assess, develop, and update documentation associated with business and accounting policies and processes.

  • Proactively participate in the implementation and monitoring of internal controls

  • Demonstrate expert-level knowledge of accounting and capital markets trading concepts

Supervisory/ Managerial Responsibilities:

May have direct supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 11 years’ experience in finance, business or a related field with 4 years’ managerial experience or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 15 years’ higher education and/or work experience with 4 years’ managerial experience

Experience in technical accounting and capital markets functions in banking/financial services industry

Specialized knowledge of ASC 815

Advanced degree or CFA or CPA certification

M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $163,120.47 - $271,867.46 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
