The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC), part of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), invites applications for a full-time Research Engineer I-IV in the focus area of Wireless Networks.

The Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) (https://bcdc.tamus.edu/) - located on the 2,300-acre RELLIS Campus in Bryan, TX - is an ecosystem for agile technology development and service-member-inspired research. The BCDC is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense, Texas A&M University System, and the State of Texas. Job Title:

Research Engineer - Wireless Networks, Levels II - IV

Job Description Summary:

The Research Engineer - Wireless Networks independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields at the Innovation Proving Grounds (IPG) and George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC). The IPG provides an outdoor test and experimentation facility capable of rigorously assessing a myriad of technologies, sensors, platforms, networks and testing processes in an operationally relevant environment. It is postured to support the test and evaluation of technology across the Technology Readiness Levels, ranging from innovative prototypes to fully developed programs. Key to the IPG is its agile approach to testing and test processes which position it as a Proving Ground for Proving Grounds.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the evaluation and analysis of technical approaches to research opportunities involving both wireless networks and test range systems.

  • Aid in the research and evaluation of relevant equipment, protocols, designs, and procedures to address research and testing requirements.

  • Contribute to the production of network designs, data acquisition systems, and other technical aspects for research proposal submissions.

  • Design, improve, and implement standards for new or upgraded research networks, as well as data acquisition and control systems.

  • Develop specifications and requirements based on feedback from researchers, systems administrators, contractors, and vendors.

  • Recommend and document system designs, network protocols, and instrumentation processes.

  • Implement security measures, configuration backup, and testing for both network systems and test infrastructure.

  • Collaborate with teams to establish and test methods for network integration and interoperability, as well as test range data acquisition systems.

  • Perform installation and configuration of network systems and data acquisition setups, ensuring compliance with testing and security standards.

  • Provide Tier I, II, and III technical support for network and data acquisition systems.

  • Diagnose and repair complex hardware and software issues, including problems with wireless network infrastructure and sensor instrumentation.

  • Monitor and evaluate system performance, ensuring compliance with government and security standards for network research and data acquisition.

  • Assist in the design and analysis of experiments and test articles.

  • Provide mentorship, training, and troubleshooting support for technicians and engineers involved in system operations.

  • Collaborate with teams to define project deliverables, reports, and presentations for research projects.

  • Compile and communicate technical updates, data, and status for periodic reports to project sponsors.- Stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices for both network research and test range systems.- Engage in ongoing training to enhance technical skills and knowledge in research computing and system engineering.

    Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer II

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronic systems engineering, computer engineering, or similar field.- Two years of relevant experience.

Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer III

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronic systems engineering, computer engineering, or similar field.- Four years of relevant experience.

Minimum qualifications for a Research Engineer IV

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electronic systems engineering, computer engineering, or similar field.- Six years of relevant experience.

    Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:

  • IT certifications in Networking, Network Security, Juniper, Cisco or other routing and security categories.

  • CBRS CPI.- Certifications in 4G and/or 5G wireless networks.- Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with designing, fabricating, testing, and troubleshooting printed circuit boards, instruments, and amplifiers.- Experience with data acquisition systems (DIO, AIO), controls systems, and wireless network architecture.- Familiarity with copper and fiber optic transmission, mixed signal electronics, sensors, and actuators (pressure, temperature, LVDT, etc.).- Proficiency in creating electrical schematics, single line diagrams, and network topology diagrams.- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.- Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills.- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Wireless: mesh radios, 4G and/or 5G core, transport, RAN, O-RAN, MANO, LMR, repeaters, HF, VHF, UHF, microwave, mmWave.- LANs, switching: copper, fiber, WiFi, VLANs, LACP, SyncE.- Monitoring: SNMP, syslog, SLA management, taps & packet brokers.- Routing protocols: IP subnetting, direct, static, OSPF, (E/I)BGP, redistribution, MPLS, VXLAN, SR.- Software-defined Networking: Yang, NETCONF, OpenFlow, etc.- Supporting services: DHCP, NTP, PTP, DNS, Radius, LDAP.- Network security: firewalls, (CG)NAT/PAT, iptables, fail2ban, CMMC.- Linux: host and network configuration, scripting.- Skilled at mentoring and training other team members.- MS Office including Visio, Adobe Acrobat and other tools: Word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and drawing applications to produce professional-quality proposals and network documentation.- Skilled at client and vendor relations, requirement assessment and analysis, statement of work creation, project management, and service delivery.- High level project management skills.- Advanced diagnostic and problem-solving methodology.
