Candidates must have the required qualifications to be considered for the position. The salary offer will be based on the candidate ’ s experience in the exact or comparable position and additional preferred qualifications will be considered.

Purpose of Position : Under the general supervision of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsel provides specialized legal counsel to RiseBoro’s Real Estate Development and Property Management divisions.

Schedule: Monday – Friday (Day Shift)

Salary Range : $140k -160k per year

Roles, Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

  • Support General Counsel concerning the overall legal and compliance functions of the Housing division

  • Provide day-to-day counseling and advice to leadership across a variety of areas, such as contractual interpretation, real estate, construction, landlord-tenant, and insurance

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of contractual agreements, such as vendor contracts and terms of service, confidentiality agreements, grants for program services, and license agreements

  • Support the General Counsel in labor negotiations and disputes with Housing-related union matters

  • Assist in drafting and maintaining the written policies and procedures and update them as needed

  • Support the management of the organization’s affiliate corporate governance structure

  • Draft policy and train employees on organizational policy changes

  • Support the General Counsel and Risk Management team in anticipating and mitigating potential legal problems involving real estate and construction-related matters

  • Remain abreast of changes and developments in the law and government policy impacting human resources, nonprofit laws and programming, and real estate development and proactively provide advice and guidance

  • Other related duties as assigned by the General Counsel

    Required Skills/Qualifications

  • J.D. degree from an accredited university and admitted to the New York State Bar

  • A minimum of four (4) years of legal experience, with experience in housing/real estate practice and demonstrated experience in a nonprofit setting

  • Experience in real estate, affordable housing development, property management, or landlord-tenant, is required

    Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the challenges faced by low-income and marginalized communities, and the operational needs of nonprofits serving those communities

  • Knowledge of construction law, preferred

  • Experience and confidence independently drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements and providing practical and business-oriented advice

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines

  • Ability to analyze situations or information and use sound judgment

  • Exceptional influence and negotiation skills

  • Possess a high degree of professional ethics and integrity

  • Possess a high level of emotional intelligence, and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and applicable software
