The Principal Electrical Engineer – Battery Electronics is a part of our battery team within the Portable Power Electronics group. You will architect best in class electronics for our next generation portable power products by leading the team through battery management technology investigation, topology selection, component evaluation, design execution, and test plan development. You will effectively and efficiently deliver platform designs that lead to successful NPD project execution and mass production launch. This position will sit at our Headquarters in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

You’ll also be DISRUPTIVE through these duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage and lead a team of electrical engineers in the design, prototype, test, and troubleshooting of embedded electronics hardware and firmware for a variety of projects.

  • Mentor and coach the team in engineering best practices including task management, root cause analysis, circuit / PCB design, and PCBA manufacturing.

  • Research and engage with prospective suppliers on selection of new technology including Lithium-Ion Battery Management ASICs, microcontrollers, Power Devices, and other analog and digital ICs.

  • Provide expertise and engineering support on high complexity projects.

  • Demonstrate Milwaukee Tools Culture of high performance and agility by independently creating Work Breakdown Structure for your work, driving to critical milestones, and giving candid communications up and down the organization on design progress and barrier removal.

  • Lead the design activities including topology and component selection, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototype builds, and test plan development and execution.

  • Use laboratory equipment to debug and develop your design with oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, spectrum analyzers, ESD/EMC, data acquisition systems, and analysis software.

  • Quickly, effectively, and candidly frame-up and escalate business risks/opportunities to senior leadership.

  • Effectively communicate and motivate up, down and across the organization to a diverse range of technical and non-technical team members.

  • Drive urgency in project schedules and accountability for establishing and achieving key project metrics that meet the organization’s needs.

  • Ensure the team is given the time and resources required to succeed by creating and managing robust project roadmaps and resource plans with converged project scope.

  • Develop plans to evaluate and assess the emerging technology market space to fit/compliment Milwaukee Tool product initiatives and development.

  • Design and qualify new designs to applicable regulatory standards such as UL, CEC, CE, and ANSI.

What TOOLS you’ll bring with you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

  • 7+ years of experience in the Embedded Electronics design field including 16/32 bit microcontroller-based circuits for measurement and power control.

  • 3+ years of team leadership experience.

  • Fundamental understanding of Lithium-Ion battery management strategies and circuits as well as familiarity with component vendors in that space.

  • Demonstrated design experience in power management with ultra-low power embedded hardware and firmware implementations.

  • Knowledge of industry best practices for analog and digital circuit layout, schematic capture, PCB layout software, and circuit simulation.

  • Must have authored firmware from scratch for a successfully launched product.

  • Proven ability to create a Work Breakdown Structure, drive to completion, and communicate progress and escalate barrier removal needs to management.

  • Self-motivated, organized, efficient, process oriented with a strong work ethic.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, exercises independent judgement and works well under pressure in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to travel 10% of the time (domestic and international).

Other TOOLS we prefer you to have:

  • Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

  • Previous PCBA design experience in Lithium-Ion Battery circuits for high volume products.

  • Knowledge of best practices for firmware development in C.
