New York Botanical Garden Digitization Intern - Africa TCN in Bronx, New York
Basic Job Functions
Intern will assist with the digitization of herbarium specimens from Africa in the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) as part of a multi-institutional NSF-funded project: Digitization TCN: Collaborative Research: Digitization and Enrichment of U.S. Herbarium Data from Tropical Africa to Enable Urgent Quantitative Conservation Assessments
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and actively helps to build and maintain an inclusive organizational culture throughout the institution.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Capture digital images of specimens.
Handle (select and refile) herbarium specimens.
Transcribe specimen data from digital images into database.
Participate in public outreach.
Qualifications
Coursework in Biology and/or museum or library studies
Experience with digital photography and herbarium procedures preferred.
Current undergraduate, graduate student, or recent graduate
Be able to work closely with others as part of a team
Be able to communicate effectively
Be able to work efficiently and with attention to detail
Familiarity with African geography
Understanding of written languages other than English a plus
Payrate:$17/hr
