Job Summary:

The Assistant Vice President for Advancement, reporting to the Vice President for Advancement & Communications, will serve as the primary strategic, administrative and management officer for the Advancement operation with direct oversight of the fundraising, alumni engagement, advancement services, stewardship, and strategic communication efforts. This position oversees four direct reports.

Fundraising Leadership

• Develops and executes comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet annual and long-term fundraising goals.

• Supervises the Director of Giving in the planning and implementation of long- and short-term strategies to secure gifts from individuals and organizations through annual, major, planned, and corporate giving initiatives.

• Develops strong positive relationships with the university community to establish the Office of Advancement as a major resource and coordinator for all university fundraising and alumni engagement activity.

• Serves as a strategic partner on the Comprehensive Campaign team.

Alumni Engagement

• Supervises the Director of Alumni Engagement, develops and implements innovative strategies and programs that inspire SUNY Brockport alumni to be engaged with their community.

• Broadens the Alumni Association’s outreach, particularly to alumni segments that have not been as intentionally engaged.

• Sets measurable goals and outcomes for Alumni Engagement/the Brockport Alumni Association and assess progress toward goals.

• Encourages and leads the AE team in developing and utilizing data to measure the effectiveness of existing programs while identifying opportunities for new initiatives that will resonate with alumni.

Strategic Planning and Reporting

• Coordinates, develops, and manages an annual fundraising and engagement plan for the Advancement operation that coincides with and supports the overall university strategic plan.

• Monitors progress toward advancement goals and provide regular reports to senior leadership.

• Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and SUNY contracts related to advancement.

Donor Stewardship, Recognition & Scholarships

• Provides oversight and direction to the Brockport Foundation Scholarship Office, via the Associate Director of Advancement, ensuring that the campus and external groups are strong partners in the selection and stewardship of student recipients and scholarship donors.

• Ensures proper stewardship of donors, acknowledging their contributions and demonstrating impact.

• Develops and manages recognition programs and naming opportunities for major donors.

Advancement Services & Finance

• Supervises the Director of Finance & Advancement Services, works closely with the team (and the Vice President) to create, and manage advancement budgets.

• Directs a dynamic prospect management and development system that includes overseeing wealth screenings and associated data analysis to drive fundraising performance and increase alumni engagement.

• Allocates resources effectively to achieve fundraising goals.

• Ensures the efficient and effective implementation of the CRM database and implement giving reports, segmentation, and tracking of gifts as needed and requested to meet strategic goals.

• Manages data to increase operational efficiency, reduce compliance risks, and streamline internal processes.

Team Leadership and Development

• Manages and mentors advancement staff promoting professional growth, engagement with the campus and external community and support of the Mission of the Division: To advance the University through engagement and philanthropy.

• Fosters a collaborative and high-performing team culture.

Collaboration with University Communications

• In conjunction with the Vice President and the AVP for University Communications, establishes a strong strategic communications plan for Advancement and the Division.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university.

  • Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible or related experience, in higher education advancement, particularly in the areas of alumni engagement, annual, major and planned giving, donor relations, and advancement operations.

  • Demonstrated success in leading and growing alumni engagement and giving programs.

  • Demonstrated experience in initiating and proactively managing successful, productive relationships on and off-campus.

  • Extensive supervisory experience of professional staff.

  • Frontline fundraising experience in leadership annual giving, major, and planned giving.

  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, as well as analytical, research and management skills; ability to think strategically on an enterprise level.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage, initiate, and prioritize multiple complex projects; ability to build consensus amongst various stakeholders.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

  • Travel and occasional evening and weekend work is required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.

  • Experience using Customer Relationship/Database Management systems, particularly Blackbaud's The Raiser's Edge/NXT.

  • Familiar with digital engagement best practices and interest in learning new technologies.

  • Service in a leadership role for successful comprehensive fundraising campaigns.

    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm

    Salary and Benefits: The minimum starting salary for this position is $135,000.
