Job Title: Analyst 1
Reports to: Laboratory Supervisor / Laboratory Manager
Department: Food Microbiology Laboratory
Location: Burnaby, B.C.
Salary Range: $23.45 - $24.40 hourly
Basic Purpose:
Perform microbiological analysis using a variety of laboratory techniques. Prepare samples for more complex analytical testing procedures. Aid in directing junior staff, when required.
Key Accountability/Responsibilities:
Adheres to Bureau Veritas’ Code of Ethics Policy
Perform basic and complex microbiological analyses/troubleshooting in all areas of the Food and Water laboratories in strict compliance to the requirements of the Microbiology Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Health and Safety policies including biohazard safety
Meet Quality and TAT specifications required by the client
Employ proper microbiology laboratory techniques to minimize the risk of sample mislabelling, sample mix-up and cross contamination between samples and other materials
Prepare and analyze samples for both basic and complex analytical testing procedures for all food and water microbiology tests including any methods requiring confirmation techniques
Ensure that samples are analyzed within the holding time and turn-around-time requirements as specified by current regulation and/or client demands; notify senior staff in advance of problems that may affect this obligation
Reading, recording, and interpretation of results for all food and water microbiology tests, including those tests for which confirmation techniques are required
Data entry, worksheet approval and data validation of results in LIMS
Assist with the continuous improvement activities in the laboratory, which includes the identification and resolution of issues relating to sample processing and methodology
Assist with the maintenance of the QC program
Co-ordinate QC activities (thermometer and pipette calibrations, weekly swabbing, airplates, etc)
Co-ordinate internal and external proficiency tests
Perform and document method validations
Monitor/maintain adequate supply of media and other chemicals
Provide technical expertise to junior staff through training, guidance and mentoring
Maintain a clean environment
Other duties as assigned
Skills and Knowledge:
Post-secondary school education and at least 2 or more years’ experience working within a Microbiology laboratory
Dynamic, energetic, motivated, positive outlook, and a “can-do” attitude
Basic understanding of computer use
Organized and detail-oriented
Able to work independently or within a group
Possess good leadership qualities
Familiarity with LIMS would be an asset
Working Conditions:
High level of work production in a fast paced lab environment with changing priorities
Requires flexible working hours, overtime, and rotational weekend/holiday work
Involves long periods of standing
Hazardous materials are handled using established safety procedures and appropriate PPE
