Position Summary
The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for Building Inspectors who will perform complicated field inspections on existing buildings and buildings under construction to ensure compliance with related building codes and local ordinances.

Work Week: Monday through Friday, 7:00am to 4:00pm
Building Inspector I: $35.96 - $38.17 per hour DOE
Building Inspector II: $38.55 - $42.13 per hour DOE
Building Inspector III: $42.56 - $46.50 per hour DOE
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
Performs detailed and technical inspections (building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical) of buildings and sites under development during all phases of construction to monitor for code compliance;
Travels to and performs on-site inspections to verify compliance with approved plans and regulations;
Examines drawings during development and assists contractors in meeting occupancy and code requirements;
Conducts final inspections, maintaining the authority to postpone building/project completion based on the adherence to related codes;
Performs periodic and follow-up inspections of new and existing buildings, structures, and installations;
Conducts on-site evaluations to ensure a minimum of fire and life safety compliance provisions are met;
Provides information to contractors and builders on the nature, requirements, and purposes of existing municipal codes;
Provides information to building designers, project owners, and contractors regarding project design, structural calculations, and coordination with other public agencies;
Promotes a process of cooperation and education to attain compliance;
Investigates and coordinates remediation of complaints of code violations;
Reviews periodicals, trade journals, and engineering reports to research new products and materials to ensure they are installed based on manufacturers’ installation instructions;
Composes field inspections and reports of corrective actions to architects, engineers, and applicants in order to remedy deficiencies noted during plan review and/or inspections;
Maintains accurate files of inspections performed and other reports;
Serves as a resource for members of the public in code applications, permitting processes, and related activities;
Researches problems, analyzes various approaches, and recommends solutions;
Coordinates work with other divisions within the organization to ensure effective and efficient operations;
Maintains compliance with safety policies and regulations;
Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.
Minimum Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; and
At least two years of experience in building construction, plans examining, or building inspection; or
Must obtain two of the following ICC or equivalent certifications within one year of employment:
Residential Building Inspector (B1);
Commercial Building Inspector (B2);
Commercial Mechanical Inspector (M2);
Commercial Electrical Inspector (E2);
IAPMO Plumbing Inspector.
Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of or ability to quickly learn all applicable Federal, State, and local codes, rules, and regulations, including the Uniform Plumbing Code, National Electrical Code, and International Codes for Building, Mechanical, Existing Building, Energy Conservation, and Fuel Gas;
Thorough knowledge of principles and techniques of modern building construction;
Thorough knowledge of construction materials and their correct installation methods;
Thorough knowledge of basic math principles;
Ability to interpret Federal, State, and Municipal building ordinances and guidelines as they apply to the application, plans, and actual construction;
Ability to earn and maintain required certifications;
Ability to deal with a wide range of persons, including situations in which individuals may be upset over some issue involved with City activities and policies;
Ability to conduct thorough inspections of new and existing buildings;
Ability to instruct project owners, designers, and contractors in methods they need to employ in order to meet code requirements;
Ability to plan and manage area of responsibility to aid the public in the efficient compliance of the adopted codes to avoid time delays and associated costs;
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
Ability to operate a personal computer, mobile, and related devices using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks;

Required Special Qualifications
Valid Driver's License and/or must obtain valid Montana Driver's license within 60 days of employment;
Must maintain required certifications throughout employment as required;
