This tenure-track, academic year position will conduct agricultural economics research that directly support producer engaged crop and/or livestock production management issues impacting farmers and ranchers in Montana. Teaching will include 3 courses that focus on the areas of agriculture and natural resource management.

Position Details

General Statement

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics ( DAEE ) at Montana State University seeks an individual who works professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possesses effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and has the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate for this tenure-track position will provide high-quality teaching of DAEE undergraduate agricultural business, economics, and financial engineering courses and possibly master’s level courses. Their scholarship will result in publications in leading disciplinary peer-reviewed journals. The area of scholarship emphasis for these positions is applied microeconomics of agriculture, including scholarship relevant to agricultural producers and firms in Montana. The successful candidates will also advise undergraduate and graduate students and participate in the department’s tradition of outreach to state, national, and global audiences. The positions consist of 45% teaching (3 courses per year), 45% scholarship, and 10% service and is funded by 50% appointment with the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station ( MAES ) and 50% College of Agriculture appointment.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics or Economics prior to the starting date.

  • Strong potential for effectiveness in teaching, scholarship, and outreach/service.

  • Demonstrated interest in scholarship relevant to commercial agriculture, applicable to commercial agriculture in Montana, especially in the JEL Code Q research areas: production economics, farm/ranch management, agricultural marketing, food marketing, finance, international trade, agricultural policy, renewable and nonrenewable resource economics, and environmental economics.

  • Demonstrated success in scholarship and teaching.

  • Scholarship and outreach interests that contribute to the MAES mission.

  • Strength in economic theory and quantitative analysis.

Montana State University is an R1 land grant university with total enrollment of 17,000 students including 2,000 graduate students. Faculty members are highly productive scholars who conduct scholarship in economics with an emphasis on agricultural and applied microeconomics and a focus on high quality publications in leading refereed journals. DAEE faculty often obtain extramural grant funding. The department offers undergraduate degrees in agricultural business, economics, and financial engineering, with undergraduate majors numbering about 400, and a rigorous, highly respected master’s degree in applied economics, graduating an average of 6-8 students per year.
