BOUNTIFUL CITY CORPORATION Journeyman/Apprentice Lineman in BOUNTIFUL, Utah

Performs construction, repairs, and maintenance of overhead and underground power systems, requiring use of precautionary work methods and safety equipment due to electrical hazards present when working on or near energized conductors and electrical accessories.

Essential Job Functions:

·  Installs, removes, maintains, and repairs poles, cross arms, pins, insulators, hardware, guys, transformers, switching devices and outdoor substation equipment in connection with construction, operation and maintenance work on dead or energized overhead and underground transmission and distribution lines operating at voltages from 120 volts to 138 KV. 

·  Installs, maintains, and operates overhead and underground distribution systems using rubber or synthetic insulating materials; including transformer replacements, energized conductor transfers service entry rebuilds and switching. 

·  Supervises, directs, plans and works with small line crew as needed. 

·  Instructs and trains Apprentice Lineman in all phases of overhead and underground work performed by a Journeyman Lineman.

·  Handle emergency calls such as power line failures, lines down, and other emergencies which may arise. 

·  Must carry a cell phone and be available for call out at any time of the day or night, year-round, regardless of weather conditions.

·  Must be willing to participate in an afterhours call out rotation.

·  Must live within a 20-minute response time of the operations center.

·  Installs and removes transformers, lightning arrestors, fuses, cutouts, oil and air brake switches, and other overhead line devices. 

·  Perform work in accordance with department safety codes and regulations. 

·  Operates and maintains light or heavy equipment which is job related.

·  Perform other duties of a like or like or lesser grade which may be assigned. 

 

Knowledge, skills, and Abilities:

Extensive knowledge of linework and electrical theory, especially overhead and underground power systems with voltages ranging from 120 volts to 138 KV. 

Must have knowledge of math, electrical calculations, transformer configurations, and substations. 

Must have developed language skills to the point of being able to read and understand instructions, safety rules, etc.

Critical Skills Expertise:

Skillfully use hand tools or machines needed for your work. 

Measure, cut, or otherwise work on materials or objects with great precision. 

Use arithmetic or shop geometry to figure amounts of material needed, dimensions to be followed, and cost of material.

Read blueprints and mapping diagrams to determine location and design of electrical system and also to determine what the finalized product should be. 

Accept responsibility for the accuracy of a completed project.

Solve problems and make decisions usin g facts and personal judgement. 

Work with various kinds of people while maintaining a professional image. 

Work well in sometimes stressful, high-pressure situations. 

Think quickly and safely.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Requires the ability to perform the following activities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reac ing, talking, hearing, and seeing.

Requires operating aerial devices and the ability to climb poles using climbing equipment.  

May work on high voltages ranging from 138 KV down, which could cause severe injury. 

Required to work in all types of construction sites. 

Required to work outdoors in any weather condition.

 

Required Licenses and Certifications:

Valid Commercial Utah Driver's license (CDL Class A)

Certification from an accredited organization of a Journeyman Lineworker

 

Education and Experience:

Completion of an accredited Lineman Apprenticeship Program or an equivalent to the city's program resulting in a Journeyman Lineman Certificate

High school diploma or equivalent

Successfully pass a background check, a driving record check, and a pre-employment drug test
