The Role-

The Advanced Materials team in Product Integrity is looking for a passionate material scientist to define and develop an innovative soft-goods (textiles, leathers, metals, rubbers) roadmap, bringing novel cost-effective customer facing materials from the lab to products. As an Advanced Materials Engineer (Level 6), you will identify key partners in industry and academia to gain access to cutting edge materials, work with internal and external partners to derisk technologies, and conduct studies to demonstrate desirability and reliability. The ideal candidate will have experience developing novel soft goods for consumer applications with a proven track record of taking ownership and driving results in a multi-disciplinary team environment.

Key job responsibilities

• Conduct research and develop tests to identify, down select, develop, and derisk new soft-good materials, including fibers, yarn and fabrics, and bio-leathers.

• Identify and propose novel material-centric customer experience enablers, methods to improve manufacturing quality, lower carbon footprint or reduce cost.

• Be hands on with test development, testing and analysis of materials using a variety of characterization and analysis tools. Use statistical tools as needed to identify solutions and trends.

• Communicate findings and proposed direction to key stakeholder, to build consensus along chosen path.

• Demonstrate manufacturability of new materials by constructing schedule/ timeline and coordinate efforts with contract manufacturers, program teams, global supply chain management, and reliability engineering

• Maintain updates on project status utilizing project management tools

• Conduct competitive analysis to contribute to the establishment of benchmarks for new materials

• Be a materials content expert in the hardware development process – define the materials requirements surrounding resins, textiles and metals.

• Mentor and grow the technical strength of the organization along the materials domain.

About the team

The Advanced Material team is chartered with developing unique and customer valued materials for Amazon’s consumer electronics products, and providing subject matter expertise for critical materials and processes. The team is comprised of experts in metallurgy, polymer chemistry, composite materials, textiles and coatings. In addition to supporting current programs, this team anticipates the needs of future products, like sustainable material solutions, and develop long term solutions to intersect business objectives. Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in materials science or related field.

  • 5+ years of experience with solving materials challenges in industry.

  • Experience using empirical material analysis and characterization tools.

  • Experience in textile manufacturing processes.

  • Experience using statistical analysis to solve engineering and manufacturing issues

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD degree in materials science or related field.

  • Experience in materials innovations leading to new products or enhanced functionality of existing products.

  • Expertise in material science including successful introduction of new materials into products.

  • Strong communication (written and verbal), collaboration, and presentation skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $114,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
