State of Massachusetts Seasonal Engineering Aide II --Lighting and Electrical Winter 24-25 in Boston, Massachusetts

About the Division of Design and Engineering: Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR’s Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E’s mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR’s facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change. * * Position Information: Seasonal Engineering Aide II—Lighting and Electrical (Boston): 11/10/24-03/15/25 (18 weeks) @ 37.5 hrs: Contact Supervisor for schedule. Monday-Friday, 1 position(s) Please note, if you are selected for this position and will be working less than 90 days, the position will automatically revert to a short-term position. Our short-term positions are not part of the salary scale that is advertised within this job posting. Should this position revert to a short-term seasonal position (less than 90 days), your salary rate will be discussed with you during the interview phase of the process. Position Summary: DCR has over 10,000 streetlights within its properties, illuminating pathways, parkways, and athletic fields. This position will assist the DCR – Lighting and Electrical Section with creating and managing streetlights data by producing data points in a map to show location, picture images, and attributes for all DCR streetlights, updating web maps and web apps, opening & closing existing GIS Streetlights Data Gaps, identifying if streetlight’s structure was updated, removed, abandoned, or ownership changed. Skills required to do this work are data editing and map making, ArcGIS Online for creating online map applications, and GPS/field experience for collecting streetlights data in the field. The successful candidate will have strong cartographic skills and a strong understanding of data editing techniques in GIS. Duties: * Working with and improving the streetlights data schema. * Determining streetlights data collection/update/maintenance workflow. * Cleanup and QA/QC of existing and new data via fieldwork and office work. * Fieldwork – mapping Data Gaps and updating Data Gaps that are out-of-date using GPS (ArcGIS Field Maps) for data collection and desktop data editing in ArcGIS Pro. * Creating documentation for fieldwork techniques, editing techniques, and other workflows. * Working with Lighting and Electrical Section to update GIS Streetlights. * Maintaining GIS Streetlights data for use in web apps for staff and the public. * Updating MassGIS's DCR streetlights layers. Preferred Qualifications: · Ability to work independently and as part of a team. · Strong GIS background in cartography and data editing · GPS fieldwork experience and motivation to do intensive fieldwork. · Strong written and oral communication skills for outreach to internal and external partners. · Ability to prioritize, manage, and execute multiple administrative tasks simultaneously. · Possession of a current and valid Mass Driver's license First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. * * Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in civil or sanitary engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, hydraulics, design transportation, structural, mining, airport, materials, electrical, sanitary, environmental, soils, drafting, highway or architectural, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions: I. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in land surveying, civil engineering, civil engineering technology or architectural technology may be substituted for the required experience.* II. Possession of a valid certificate issued by a recognized technical institute indicating proficiency in civil engineering technology may be substituted for the required experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
