Project Consultant, Rail Transit Vehicles Electrical Engineering & Operations (Hatch Associates Consultants, Inc., Boston, MA):

Responsible for rail transit vehicle signaling and control system upgrade projects. Oversee project team efforts to provide technical support on a variety of electrical engineering tasks and assignments in the areas of rail vehicle procurement, modernization, and service for rail transit projects. Review proposals from contractors and assist client in bid evaluation. Evaluate contract change requests for technical, production, operational, and economic impact related to projects. Prepare reports for client use. Control project costs and schedules. Perform technical research for preparation of specifications for installation and interfaces of the on-board Positive Train Control (PTC), Automatic Train Control (ATC), and Automatic Train Operation (ATO) equipment, digital and analog train control systems. Identify applicable standards, codes, and regulations. Perform calculations, modeling and simulations using general purpose and specialized engineering software to establish required equipment characteristics and parameters. Review technical drawings, control logic, detailed specifications, manuals, and other documentation for on-board PTC, ATC, and ATO systems, and general electrical equipment. Review reliability, safety, and maintainability aspects of on-board train control systems design. Review detailed train control equipment test procedures for qualification of component and system performance, oversee execution of the qualification test efforts. Identify necessary personnel training and safety precautions during test execution in compliance with relevant codes and regulations. Conduct field inspections and measurements for on-board equipment in question, including development of electronic measurement setups and associated test procedures, data collection and offsite analysis using state of the art sensing, measurement, and data logging equipment. Perform engineering analysis including electrical/electronic circuit analysis, control system logic verification, transient behavior analysis, statistical data processing.

Full time employment, Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week (8:30 am – 5:30 pm).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, and 5 years of progressive, post-baccalaureate related work experience; OR a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or related field, and 3 years of related work experience.

Of the required experience, must have 3 years of work experience in each of the following:

  • Design and deployment of the PTC/ATC train control on-board systems;

  • Qualification testing of the PTC/ATC train control equipment, including both lab and field test activities;

  • Train control equipment performance monitoring and troubleshooting, including control logic algorithms;

  • Train control systems design; and

  • Applying Federal Codes and Regulations and industry standards, including FRA, AREMA, IEEE, IEC in governing design, deployment, and use of train controls, PTC and ATC equipment.
