As the Department Manager for Asplundh Engineering Services (AES) in Boonton, NJ, you will provide strategic leadership for the local engineering office.This full-time, in-office(hybrid) position may require some short-term travel.

The successful candidate will oversee all engineering activities at the AES BoontonOffice, ensuring cohesive operations, strong performance, and employee empowerment.Your responsibilities will include leading bid preparation, ensuring the quality assurance and quality control ofwork products, and monitoring project timelines and budgets.

It is essential tomanage multiple projects and teams of engineers simultaneously while effectively collaboratingwith the engineering staff, leadership team, and AES customers. Additionally, a key aspect of this role involves expanding thecurrent business by building new relationships and maintaining existing customerconnections.

Leadership & Culture

  • Oversee project chargeability and the investment of overhead labor and costs to ensure financial accountability.

  • As a member of our Leadership Team, evaluate project opportunities and facilitate decisions that align with business objectives and resources.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Coordinate with other Department Managers, Directors and VP’s to ensure consistent practices across all offices through effective coordination.

  • Enhance internal communication by actively sharing information, experiences, and best practices.

  • Collaborate closely with technical and business line management to align employee development with business objectives.

  • Interpret and establish policies and strategic goals in partnership with senior management.

Recruiting & Team Growth

  • Partner with HR & Talent Acquisition on recruitment efforts to attract experienced professionals and new graduates via various channels.

  • Work closely with leadership to assess and hire qualified candidates while emphasizing staff retention.

Staff Development, Performance Management & Mentorship

  • Educate team members on career paths within Asplundh Engineering, our subsidiaries and other Asplundh companies and provide resources for professional growth.

  • Champion quality initiatives while coordinating with departments for consistent quality control.

  • Provide mentorship to improve job performance and quality standards.

  • Conduct regular performance discussions to foster continuous improvement and offer guidance on personal and professional goals.

  • Manage the annual performance appraisal process and develop improvement plans for employees as needed.

Business Development

  • Collaborate with the Leadership Team to achieve profitability goals, identify resource needs, and drive business development opportunities.

  • Proactively anticipate challenges and propose solutions.

  • Support sales and marketing activities including client relationship management and proposal development.

  • Serve as the technical expert on project-related inquiries to provide informed guidance.

Project Oversight

  • Monitor project progress, providing constructive feedback and direction to enhance schedules, budgets, and quality.

  • Manage departmental workloads, ensuring efficient utilization of staff and resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) degree, preferably in Power Systems, or an equivalent level of technical experience.

  • A Professional Engineering License is preferred.

  • At least 10 years of experience in the electrical power industry, with hands-on or field experience being a plus.

  • A minimum of 3 years of managerial experience overseeing multiple direct reports.

  • Experience in an engineering environment focused on designing and specifying all aspects of low, medium, and high voltage construction, inspection, and testing of facilities and equipment in utility, power generation, and commercial industrial markets.

  • Knowledge of protective relaying, controls, SCADA, and protection applications, along with experience in protective device coordination and the setting and programming of electromechanical and microprocessor relays, including SEL, Basler, ABB, GE, and Cooper.

  • Design experience with transmission, distribution, and generator interconnection substations.

  • Design experience with overhead and underground medium voltage distribution systems.

  • Familiarity with utility-based software programs such as ASPEN, SKM, EasyPower, or ETAP.

  • Experience working with equipment ranging from 0.5 kV to 500 kV.

  • Ability to perform job tasks both in the office and in the field.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for client interaction and the capability to develop clear and concise technical reports.

  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office programs, AutoCAD, and project management software.
