Support the planning and execution of New Student Programs events and Services - New Student Orientations, Family Orientation, relevant Bronco Welcome events, International Student Orientation, and First Year student success programming; First Year Support initiatives are nimbly designed to address equity gaps identified by the Strategic Enrollment and Retention Plan (SERP). This position will also support the hiring and training of all student staff and reports to one of two New Student Programs Senior Coordinators.
An interest in student development and a commitment to student advocacy are vital for success in this position. Candidates must be organized and have an understanding of how coordination supports ongoing programmatic design, and redesign.
The position will represent the NSP office in the University community and the prospective student community, and will work collaboratively with Student Affairs departments and Academic Affairs representatives.
This person must be capable of communicating well with numerous campus partners in an annual cycle. The success and impact of new student orientation, transition support, and first year experience work is dependent upon this strong communication.
This position serves as a role model to student staff who function as ambassadors of University culture and role models to current students; they must understand their part in creating a student staff that thrives under pressure and demonstrates respect for the responsibility they\'ve been given. They must be confident in implementing disciplinary measures with students, as needed.
This employee will be one of the university\'s representatives to new students and their families. Therefore, they must be able to make quick and thoughtful decisions about all aspects of the programs and services offered by NSP. Customer Service skills are important. Failure to make prompt, informed, service-oriented and ethical decisions could result in a negative experience for new students, families and staff across campus.
Department Overview:
Boise State New Student Programs helps introduce students and their families to the college experience. The general functional areas of our department include creating and implementing orientation, first year mentorship, and parent and family engagement. Our work ensures our new first year, transfer, non-traditional, and international students have a smooth and positive transition to the Boise State University community.
Level Scope:
Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.
Essential Functions:
60% of Time the New Student Programs Coordinator must:
Coordinate Orientation and transition programs (first year, transfer/non-traditional student, international and Virtual)
- Contribute to the organization and execution of annual orientation programming.
- Support the execution of International Student Orientation (twice per year) and Virtual Orientation (AKA Long Distance Orientation).
- Support all Housing and Conference Services Coordination.
- May take ownership of specific portfolios pieces with the larger the larger orientation program (Ex: Evening Activities, Parking and Transportation Services, etc)
- Support the hirin of all student staff (approx. 30)
- Support the seasonal training of all student staff each spring.
- Orchestrate student development opportunities that focus on the growth and development of student employability, as determined by the direct supervisor.
30% of New Student Programs Coordinator:
First Year Student Support Initiatives
- Organize and run the Peer Navigator (PN) program.
- Supervise the 15-30 peer mentors who support these programs.
- Support data collection, operation, and campus collaboration for the peer mentorship program.
- Mobilize the PN staff in outreach efforts to support the Becoming a Bronco survey.
- Plan and support Parent & Family Weekend
10% of Time the New Student Programs Coordinator:
Department Leadership and Support
Provide departmental and divisional support by participating in various hiring committees and Student Affairs events and initiatives. Attend professional conferences, workshops, and/or seminars to continue professional growth and development.
Serve on cross-campus committees as appropriate, with attention to First Year Experience developments.
Assist other staff members with special events and programs as requested by the supervisor.
