Job Description

Essential Functions

The College Student Intern for the Transportation Planning team performs responsible and supportive work in transportation planning activities and development review. Working alongside the Traffic/Special Projects Division of the Municipal Services Department, the intern performs planning and administrative tasks and related work as assigned. All work is performed under the immediate supervision of the City Traffic Engineer.

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs research and reports on various transportation and planning issues;

  • Assists with the land development review process.

  • Supports administration of capital improvement projects in planning and design.

  • Draft informational project materials for internal and external audiences.

  • Participates in transportation planning process.

  • Assists with data entry and computer modeling.

  • Assists with ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.

  • Assists with maintaining and organizing files of traffic and parking studies.

  • Operates standard office machines.

RELATED TASKS:

  • Drafts correspondence including staff comments and other materials;

  • Coordinates with other government agencies and consultants;

  • Performs technical and field studies including data collection as directed.

  • Performs related tasks as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of general planning and transportation principles, practices, methods, and equipment related to professional planning or engineering.

  • Standard modern office practices and procedures.

  • Business English usage and spelling.

    Skilled in:

  • Communication – both oral and written, especially as related to providing detailed communications to internal clients

  • Critical thinking – using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, to a moderate degree of proficiency.

  • Research of best practices.

    Ability to:

  • Work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with associates and supervisors.

  • Conduct work on multiple tasks with minimal direction.

  • Conduct themselves in a professional manner.

  • Prepare technical reports.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

PROGRAM TERM:

The Municipal Service Department accepts Interns during each college semester.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

The Municipal Services Department hosts one (1) Intern per college semester.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

In addition to the minimum eligibility, candidates seeking to be considered for an Internship in Transportation Planning must meet or comply with the following requirements:

  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in or entering their junior year, or a graduate school program with major coursework in Traffic Engineering or Planning

  • Have obtained and maintained a minimum 3.0 GPA.

  • Have the ability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week not to exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week. Hours are flexible and will be scheduled Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Familiarity with GIS and/or web design is a plus.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has successfully completed coursework, which includes a moderate degree of proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data analysis.

  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) is preferred.

  • Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience in transportation engineering or planning.

CITY OF BOCA RATON - BENEFITS SUMMARY

Part-Time Employees

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year

PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee's supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.

MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
