Summary:

Under general supervision of the Police Sergeant, provides safety and security to citizens within the community through the patrolling of neighborhoods, enforcement of laws and ordinances, apprehension of suspects and response to public assistance calls.

  • Patrols assigned area looking for unusual or suspicious activities or persons; operates police vehicle; and provides back-up assistance to co-workers.
  • Enforces local, state and federal laws and regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency incident calls such as theft, disturbances, vandalism, alarms, burglary and robbery; investigates calls: conducts interviews with victims and suspects; completes reports and necessary paperwork.
  • Performs traffic enforcement; investigates traffic accidents and Driving Under the Influence(DUI) cases, and completes related reports.
  • May conduct investigations into criminal activities such as narcotics or sex crimes; may participate in Federal task forces; coordinates activities and investigations with other agencies.
  • May perform functions as a school resource officer; participates in and presents preventative education and information through community and school awareness projects; teaches and counsels those within the community on law enforcement activities, programs and referral resources.
  • Represents the Department at court hearings; prepares department materials requested and/or subpoenaed by the courts; and testifies in court cases.
  • Identifies, attends and conducts training and educational programs and seminars.
  • Maintains police vehicle and equipment in clean and operating order.
  • Interacts with other police personnel, City departments, outside organizations and businesses, and federal, state and local organizations in order to accomplish tasks.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Investigates major crimes, burglaries, thefts, assaults, narcotics, suspected arsons and unattended deaths.
  • Secures crime scenes, interviews witnesses and suspects.
  • Follows investigative leads, collects and preserves evidence for analysis.
  • Constructs diagrams of crime scenes.
  • Prepares clear, timely and comprehensive reports of incidents investigated.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Moderate degree of knowledge of police department policies and procedures, current law enforcement practices, techniques and procedures, and criminal and traffic codes.
  • Moderate degree of knowledge of City, state and federal laws, regulations and ordinances or equivalent knowledge of and experience in understanding and applying similar policies and procedures of another employer.
  • Moderate degree of knowledg of investigative procedures, court procedures, defensive driving, and first aid.
  • Moderate degree of knowledge of hazardous chemicals or materials.
  • Entry level of skill in operating a personal computer and software applications.
  • High level of skill in the care and safe operation of a variety of firearms, impact weapons, and chemical agents.
  • High level of skill in maintaining composure and working effectively under stressful conditions and emergency situations.
  • Mid level of skill in effectively communicating both orally and in writing.
  • High level of skill in operating motor vehicles during emergency, high-risk situations.
  • Mid level of skill in following verbal and written instructions.
  • High level of skill in making decisions in emergency and crisis situations.
  • Mid level of skill in working independently or as a team member.

Additional Required Knowledge and Skills for Detective:

  • High level of skill in analyzing situations in determining the existence of probable cause.
  • High level of skill in dealing with people in high stress situations.
  • High level of skill in writing accurate reports.
