Based in the Financial Aid office, this position will provide outreach and support services, acting as a liaison to connect students with internal and external resources while creating a culturally safe and accessible environment. The Navigator will provide office hours to current MSUB students and students at tribal colleges and high schools, establishing crucial relationships to ease the transition to MSUB. This service will be marketed in collaboration with Gear Up and MSUB’s TRiO Educational Opportunities Center (EOC), both of which have personnel that work directly with and in tribal colleges and schools.This position primary areas of focus:1. Serve as the primary financial aid representative at the University campus or at the City College campus. This position requires exemplary customer service skills, a willingness to listen carefully, above-average written and verbal communication skills, the ability to understand complex institutional processes (financial aid, admissions, and advising), and the ability to work well under pressure.2. Serve as the liaison for the financial aid office and the Native American Achievement Center, which requires maintaining working relationships with students, staff, and faculty. Additionally, this role will provide financial literacy services aimed at educating students and the campus community about healthy financial practices, student loan debt management, repayment options, and cohort default rates.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:Customer Service:•Provide one-on-one support to students and be available for staff and faculty assistance at City College and Main Campus.•Participate in University campus and City College events such as orientation, new student registration, and occasional evening hours.•Screen and refer customers to appropriate internal and external resources, departments, and offices.•Clearly explain a student’s financial aid offer. • Understand why a student has not yet been packaged.•Analyze client requests to determine the appropriate form, application, or documentation to be provided based on customers’ requests and circumstances involved.Document Processing and Communication:•Review all applications, forms, and documents received for accuracy, completion, and compliance with federal, state, and institutional guidelines and refer specialized questions/concerns to appropriate office/staff member in Financial Aid or at City College.•Track student, staff, or faculty requests and prepare written correspondence including preparing packets of material based on those requests.•Generate emails, paper letters, or ROAMESG notifications to students regarding missing information, awards, revisions, SAP, etc.•Provide financial aid and literacy counseling in person, by phone, and email for students, parents, and departments on campus.•Data-entry within Banner system.•Work closely with other Financial Aid staff, Enrollment Management teams, and faculty.Networking:•Stay informed about changes in financial aid, scholarships, waivers, and state legislation. Connect students with their tribal education offices and inform them about student crisis funds.Case Management:•Assess and identify the needs of each student, connecting them to appropriate resources and support, such as Satisfactory Academic Progress appeals.Advocacy:•Act as an advocate for Native students, fostering a positive environment and enhancing their sense of belonging.Presentations:•Coordinate and facilitate events, programs, and projects with Gear Up and TRiO Educational Opportunities Center (EOC) regarding financial aid at local tribal colleges and high schools.Feedback and Dissemination:•Consult with and make recommendations to stakeholders on issues affecting Native American student success, retention, and their sense of belonging.QUALITIES:•Strong knowledge of financial aid processes and resources.•Experience working with Native American students and communities.•Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.•Ability to create a culturally safe and inclusive environment.•Proactive and organized with a commitment to student success.•Strong understanding and appreciation of Native American culture and traditions.•Proven success in fostering positive relationships and delivering impactful programs or services.•Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with tribal communities.•Thorough knowledge of all financial aid forms, applications, and documents.•Comfortable using computer for internet, search engines, Microsoft, and Outlook programs.•Ability to accurately interpret data in Banner from the Financial Aid, Admissions, Registrar, and Accounts Receivable components.•Ability to work well with diverse populations in a sensitive non-threatening manner.•Understand federal, state, and institutional policies, procedures, and regulations and the ability to conduct research for specific questions.•Thorough knowledge of and compliance with FERPA guidelines.•Ability to work independently in a collaborative environment.•Ability to make decisions, prioritize and efficiently and effectively balance many projects at a time.•Creative approach to problem-solving and the ability to build positive relationships with students, faculty, parents, and community members.•Demonstrated experience working with a wide range of constituents including college students, staff, faculty, and administrators.Education Required: Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related disciplineExperience Required: Familiarity with federal student aid.Education Preferred: Master’s degree in Business, finance, economics, or related fieldExperience Preferred: One to three years of financial aid office experience.Montana State University Billings is committed to providing a working and learning environment free from discrimination.
