Overview of Department & Mentor

Outstanding internship opportunities exist in the Cedars Sinai Cancer Research Center for Health Equity (CRCHE) to gain experience in cancer epidemiology with a focus on breast cancer survivorship. Dr. Cody Ramin conducts research on the late effects of treatment in breast cancer survivors, including cardiovascular disease and subsequent cancers. This work includes examining cancer treatment-related cardiotoxicity, identifying opportunities for risk stratification and long-term surveillance for cardiovascular disease, and ethnic and racial disparities in outcomes among breast cancer survivors.

Role Summary & Objectives

The specific research aim for this internship will focus on the long-term effects of treatment, including cardiotoxicity or subsequent cancers, in breast cancer survivors.

The Research Intern will be trained on conducting targeted literature reviews to synthesize results from completed studies and identify important research gaps.

The Research Intern will build skills in statistical programming and simple epidemiological analyses.

The Research Intern will be trained on effectively communicating research objectives, methods, results, and conclusions through scientific writing and presentations.

Role Activities & Timeline

The goal of this internship is to provide students with knowledge in epidemiologic research related to breast cancer and survivorship. Specifically, the internship will focus on exploring the long-term effects of treatment, such as cardiotoxicity or subsequent cancers, in breast cancer survivors. Under close supervision and guidance of Dr. Ramin, the intern will gain hands-on experience in epidemiologic research, including at the project's outset, Dr. Ramin will meet with the intern to establish a timeline, mentoring plan, and internship goals.

  • Months 1-2: Orientation to the department, mandatory trainings, and acclimatization to internal processes within the Ramin Lab.

  • Months 3-4: Interns will concentrate on conducting targeted literature reviews.

  • Months 4-5: The intern will focus on statistical programming, epidemiological analyses, and working on presentation skills.

  • Month 6-7: the interns will engage in simple epidemiologic analyses, scientific writing, and presentation skills for the remaining months.

  • Months 8-12: A final culminating project will involve drafting a scientific manuscript and/or poster.

Weekly meetings with Dr. Ramin will be held to monitor progress and facilitate ongoing internship goals.

Progress reports will be periodically completed by both the intern and Dr. Ramin. Progress will be evaluated based on the completion of internship goals, improved knowledge and skills, and increased independence throughout the internship. Weekly meetings will be conducted.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience

  • Must be 18 years of age or older and have a HS Diploma or GED.

  • Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern appointment.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Minimum college junior/senior majoring in public health or related field. Proficient knowledge of statistical programming (SAS, Stata, or R) is preferred.
