Amazon Data Science Manager, NA Transportation Service in Bellevue, Washington

Description

The North America Transportation Service (NATS) organization strives to deliver packages to Amazon’s customers with fast and reliable delivery speeds at the lowest cost. Providing a high quality delivery service requires a carefully optimized outbound transportation network design that makes the right tradeoffs between cost, speed and quality in order to maximize the Long-term Free Cash Flow (LTFCF).

We are looking for an enthusiastic, customer obsessed, science leader with strong scientific thinking, good statistics experience, skills to help manage projects and operations, improve metrics, and develop scalable processes and tools.

The primary role of a Data Scientist within Amazon is to address business challenges through building a compelling case, and using data to influence change across the organization. This individual will be given responsibility on their first day to own those business challenges and the autonomy to think strategically and make data driven decisions. Decisions and tools made in this role will have significant impact to the customer experience, as it will have a major impact on how we operate the transportation network.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop input and assumptions based preexisting models to estimate the costs and savings opportunities associated with varying levels of network growth and operations

  • Creating metrics to measure business performance, identify root causes and trends, and prescribe action plans

  • Managing multiple projects simultaneously

  • Working with technology teams and product managers to develop new tools and systems to support the growth of the business

  • Communicating with and supporting various internal stakeholders and external audiences

About the team

The NA-Customer Delivery Excellence (CDE) team within the NATS org uses machine learning, analytics and data science to identify opportunities for Amazon’s NA Transportation network with an objective to enhance Amazon’s ability to deliver packages to customers in faster, cheaper and reliable manner. We generate insights to guide long term strategy as well as provide short and medium term plans for our execution teams. We use data to predict and understand the delivery speed and quality we are offering to our customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of building quantitative solutions as a scientist or science manager experience

  • 2+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience

  • 5+ years of applying statistical models for large-scale application and building automated analytical systems experience

  • Knowledge of Python or R or other scripting language

  • Master's degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, machine learning or equivalent quantitative field

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a least one area of Machine Learning (NLP, Regression, Classification, Clustering, or Anomaly Detection)

  • PhD in computer science, mathematics, statistics, machine learning or equivalent quantitative field

  • Experience directly managing scientists or machine learning engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $142,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $272,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
