The Middle Mile Planning Research & Optimization Science team builds complex science models and solutions that work across our vendors, warehouses and carriers to optimize both time & cost of getting the packages delivered. As an Applied Scientist, you’ll design, develop and implement state-of-the-art models and solutions used by Amazon worldwide. You will need to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams to solve problems, create operational efficiencies, and deliver successfully against high organizational standards. As part of your role you will regularly interact with software engineering teams and business leadership. The focus of this role is to research, develop, and deploy models that will inform and support our business, primarily in the areas of scheduling and routing transportation for air, truck, and rail. You will have the opportunity to work with some of the leading scientists in the areas of mathematical programming, heuristics, optimization, and machine learning.

Key job responsibilities

  • Develop accurate and scalable optimization, mathematical programming, and heuristic methods to solve our logistic network planning problems.

  • Lead and partner with the engineering and operations teams to drive modeling and technical design for complex business problems in transportation.

  • Lead complex modeling analyses to aid management in making key business decisions and set new policies.

  • Enhance and maintain mathematical programming models to optimize Amazon’s transportation network.

  • Perform deep dives on plans, discussing with business teams potential risks, and opportunities using data analysis.

Basic Qualifications

  • PhD in operations research, applied mathematics, theoretical computer science, or equivalent

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, Python, Java or Perl

  • Experience building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application

  • Detailed knowledge of applied optimization methods, specially mixed-integer programming and network flows.

  • Expertise in building optimization models and implementing them on mixed-integer programming solvers (e.g. CPLEX, Gurobi, XPRESS)

  • Excellent communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong problem-solving ability and the ability to work in ambiguous and constantly evolving environment.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrable work experience on optimization models that have been deployed into production systems (strategic, planning, and/or operational).

  • Experience with writing database queries in languages such as SQL.

  • Experience with machine learning methods such as neural networks, support vector machines, decision tree models, or clustering methods.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $222,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
