Department Summary:

MITRE’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) Solutions department in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Autonomy Innovation Center is seeking a qualified Lead AI Software Systems Engineer to develop systems utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies for solving problems for a safer world. The department applies human-centered engineering to AI and software development practices, empowering diverse human teams and AI-enabled systems to produce greater outcomes together than either could alone. The department supports a wide range of sponsors and internal customers and is active in MITRE’s internal research program. The qualified candidate should be an experienced software engineer with working knowledge of and experience with AI fundamentals who will lead teams to apply modern frameworks and human-centered methodologies to build tools that leverage AI, Large Language Models (LLM), and ML.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Assist MITRE and government sponsors in the architecture and implementation of solutions to solve challenging problems in domains such as healthcare, intelligence, and defense

  • Lead complex projects, planning and guiding the work of others in the technical development of AI-focused applications and other software solutions

  • Lead teams to solve problems utilizing modern software engineering techniques, data engineering techniques, and human-centered methodologies

  • Demonstrate expertise in industry standard best practices for software design, implementation, testing, and documentation

  • Build systems that incorporate LLM, AI, and ML technologies

  • Apply rapid prototyping techniques and agile methodologies

Basic Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience

  • 6+ years of related experience with programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, Python, SQL, R, and C++

  • Experience building systems with AI and ML technologies

  • Strong fundamentals in software engineering, object-oriented programming, web application development, software architecture, and data engineering

  • Familiarity with the general principles, constructs, and concepts in which AI/ML tools are built

  • Experience leading project teams of diverse skillsets

  • Proven ability to work independently to learn new technologies, techniques, processes, languages, platforms, and systems

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills

  • Demonstrated ability to apply principles, theories, and concepts comparable to those obtained with a Master’s degree in a relevant field of study

  • US Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD Top Secret clearance

  • This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field

  • Strong fundamentals in AI and ML

  • Active DoD Top Secret/SCI clearance
