About This Role:

The position of outreach and program development specialist is responsible for strategic outreach and building collaborations among Lamar faculty and staff to pursue external research and education grants sponsored by federal, state and private agencies and organizations. The ideal candidate is a collaboration builder who understands sponsored program needs and expected outcomes, and can convert project ideas into grant proposal through superior writing. The specialist is expected to foster and facilitate the development and production of competitive grant proposals by establishing collaborations between internal and external stakeholders. This position will provide guidance and training to assist Lamar faculty and staff in improving the success and competitiveness of sponsored project applications submitted by Lamar University.

What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities

  • Works with faculty and academic administration to become aware of external sponsored programs and increase the university’s capacity and competitiveness in developing programs and research products that meet the needs of funding agencies/organizations. This job function includes assisting Lamar faculty and staff in drafting the proposals that comply with sponsors’ requirements and cost principles of the Uniform Guidance.

  • Collaborates with departments and community partners to analyze project needs and seek funding opportunities to address the identified needs. Facilitates team building with stakeholders and serves as a point of contact for communications between internal and external agencies for new collaborative initiatives. Manages a list of agencies and associated personnel external to the university and attends community events as a representative of Lamar University.

  • Actively engage and lead grant writing to federal agencies and private corporations/foundations to obtain funding for new infrastructure, personnel, or education programs. Will provide front-end strategy development and implementation for various levels of investigators and research activities.

  • Develop and manage a faculty mentoring system for newly hired faculty in developing research and sponsored programs. Program will ensure new faculty understand research career advancement, research productivity and teaching excellence, and building collaborative relationships among colleagues to advance the research mission of Lamar University.

  • Designs and deliver training programs for faculty, staff, and students to better understand regional and national research landscape, as well as pertinent grant regulation and university policies and procedures the engagement for enhancing the research operation on campus.

  • Organize and facilitate research events, including research seminars, symposia, workshops, trainings, and conferences at Lamar University.

  • Knowledge of project development and proposal preparation, including drafting grant proposal.

  • Proficiency in conceptualizing project ideas in writing.

  • An ability to communicate in a professional manner orally and in writing.

  • Skilled in interpersonal relationships, planning, and communication.

  • An understanding in evaluating project successes quantitatively.

  • Familiarity with university research administration and research policies.

  • Ability to build interdisciplinary alliances among administrative, academic, government, and industrial units.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in STEM , liberal arts, business management or related discipline; or

  • BS degree in STEM , liberal arts, or business management discipline with certification in leadership and project management.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in strategic planning, or leading an organizational department, including running business.

  • Experience in developing programs and/or curriculum to accomplish desired outcomes.

  • Experience in providing skills training and organizing workshops and conference.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree is preferred but nor required.
