Reads and interprets blueprints or works from verbal or written instructions or from
the part to be copied or fitted.
Plans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types
of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants, and machine
tool feeds and speeds.
Heat treats and welds parts as required.
Determines specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gaging
tools, performing required inspection before, during, and after machining.
Performs hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Uses
hand tools of the trade.
Fits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools, and dies. Sets up, runs off, and tests dies to
produce a product to specifications, tracing die difficulties to their source and
correcting same.
May assist machinists and millwrights in punch press overhaul.
May work with product designers providing input to manufacturing capability on newly formed products.
Complies with all work instructions, safety policies, and standards of conduct.
Continue to keep current in skills through training, classes and on the job training.
Capable of cross training within multiple areas creating flexibility and understanding.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education required:
Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D equivalent required
Experience:
Completion of formal apprenticeship program.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Sound decision making skills
Good math, reading and writing skills
Strong trouble shooting skills
Requires a very high degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are required.
High degree of attention and care required, to prevent injury to self and others when operating machine tools .
Ability to work well in a team environment
Strong organization skills
Skills/Competencies:
Blueprint reading with understanding of dimension and tolerance
Inspect/verify parts by using inspection equipment and methods
Proficient computer skills and electronic data management
Knowledge of cutting tool geometry, speeds/feeds for various materials
Knowledge or Trigonometry and other mathematical formulas to calculate machining processes
Physical Requirements:
Exert 25 to 80 pounds of force seldom, and/or
Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force sometimes.
Exert up to 10 to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds regularly.
Stand, walk, push, pull reach overhead and bend to the floor.
