Custom Job Purpose:

This position exists to provide leadership, coordination and support in the Student Services department. The Assistant Director will assist and support the Director with district policy compliance, investigations, trainings and consultation regarding any of the areas under Student Services. The Assistant Director will collaborate with other leaders in the Learning Support division and across the district to address systemic concerns for the benefit of all students. The Assistant Director will be responsible for recruiting, hiring, supervising and evaluating staff based on the needs of the department and division.

Essential Functions of this Job

Collaborates with administrators, teachers, staff, parents and community stakeholders to ensure appropriate implementation of Student Services programs across the district. Provides ongoing technical assistance to schools and families regarding bullying and harassment investigations, including Title IX complaints. Assists with state and federal complaint investigations and corrective actions. Develops and updates trainings in the area of responsibility. Assists with reviewing and managing department budgets. Prepares department reports. Oversees department staff meetings when needed. Has the ability to diffuse violent, intense or volatile crisis situations when needed. Monitors and compiles data on department and division initiatives, including compliance with procedures. Provides support and assistance to department supervisors regarding staff concerns. Displays calm, confident leadership skills during conflict resolution. Maintains positive relationships with community partners. Serves as department representative on community groups when needed. Assists with monitoring compliance and preparing reports for department policies and procedures. Provides training and remediation to schools and staff when needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of student services programs, including psychological services, social work services, prevention services, health services and Section 504. Knowledge of local, state, and federal mandates and school board policies and procedures in assigned area. Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate staff professional development, programs and services. Ability to prepare concise, comprehensive reports utilizing effective written communication and data analysis/processing skills. Superior written and oral communication skills required. Outstanding interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills are required to work effectively with students, parents, school personnel and community agency personnel. Effective public speaking skills necessary. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.

Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with at least a Master's degree in a student services field. Specialist or Doctorate degree is preferred. A minimum of five years' experience supervising staff and managing programs is required. Must have valid FLDOE certification or FL licensure in a student services field.

Work Context:

Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires coordinating or leading others in accomplishing work activities. Requires both virtual and face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with students, internal and external contacts, and with the public.

Physical Environment:

Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires sitting for the majority of the day and the ability to infrequently lift, carry, or otherwise move and position objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Requires travel to schools and facilities within the district.
