Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Senior Principal Digital Control Power Engineer to join a team designing and building advanced, state-of-the-art power systems in our Baltimore, MD location. Our team supports multiple programs to develop power solutions within 10KW range for radar and EOIR applications. Candidates should have a strong control systems and embedded software background, experience with the design, integration and test of multiple parts of a control system. These include telemetry sensors for temperature, current, voltage, etc., embedded DSPs or microcontrollers, serial communication interfaces, and power sequencer chips.

Roles and responsibilities include:

• Function as the lead design engineer for one or more parts of a power control system. These include:

Design of a C-based bare metal microcontroller code used for implementing control of various power trains. Frequency response measurement of various control loops for design verification. Design of compensation stages using MATLAB. Development of an application state machine to sequence the turn on/off of multiple power outputs. Design and implementation of serial communication interfaces to the system; commonly used interfaces are CAN, UART, or SPI.

• Support integration and testing of the power system by programming the microcontroller, troubleshooting control response, and making code adjustments on-the-fly.

• Analyze the designed control system in both time and frequency domains. Iterate through the design process until the control system meets all system requirements.

• Generate the required documentation to comply with the software design process such as microcontroller architecture block diagrams, control timelines, detailed interface definitions, software description document, and programming instructions.

• Aid the power supply hardware designer in assigning the microcontroller IO.

This position is contingent upon the ability to obtain and maintain an active DoD Secret Clearance or the transferal of an active DoD Secret Clearance and contract award.

Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal Digital Control Power Engineer

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other related technical degree, and 8 years of relevant experience (6 years with a Master of Science degree, 4 years with a PhD) Will consider additional 4 years of applied experience in lieu of degree requirements.

• Understanding of digital control theory and types of compensators used in a digital control system

• Understanding of real-time embedded systems

• Experience implementing software control algorithms with microcontrollers or Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)

• Experience with integration and test of a control system that utilizes a microcontroller or a DSP for digital control

• Experience with commonly used serial interfaces such as UART, SPI, and CAN

• US Citizenship with the ability to obtain a Secret clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

• Understanding of power converter topologies and generation of PWM signals for switching devices

• Experience analyzing control system performance using MATLAB

• Understanding of interrupt-driven architecture

• Experience with simulation and analysis of a control system in MATLAB/Simulink

• Experience supporting trade studies

• Experience with the selection of digital controllers based on cost constraints and technical performance requirements

• Troubleshooting experience

• Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink

• Active Secret security clearance

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.

Salary Range: $127,000 - $190,600

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
