Job Description: Product Manager

General Description

Program & Carrier Management

  • Underwriting Profitability: Is accountable for delivering Program profitability.

  • Contributes to negotiating, monitoring, and executing program guidelines, authority and procedures with carrier(s)

  • Provides oversight to ensure that all underwriting systems and processes are up-to-date and accurately reflect current guidelines/eligibility requirements

  • Liaises with all business / shared service functions to provide industry/program subject matter expertise.

  • Evaluate and manage industry /program KPI?s to ensure that as a business we are proactively managing our performance. E.g. maximizing our renewal retention, new business growth and UW profitability.

  • Co-ordinates carrier and other external audits

  • Provides input to the Industry Manager around strategic direction, budget, etc.

  • Execution/SME on implementation of operation improvement projects

Individual Account UW, Management and Oversight

  • Manages the referral process to the carrier

  • Handles UW escalations beyond the core UW team authority levels

  • Reviews program internal audit results with the Service / UW teams and establishes recommended courses of action with the relevant teams.

  • Provides periodic product/underwriting training

  • Maintains UW guideline and other relevant documentation for the account UW teams.

Distribution Management

  • Works with the sales and marketing teams to educate them on Industry trends (IA) and territory/broker performance

  • Handles escalated inquiries/concerns

  • As part of the industry team, works with our Distribution team and key strategic brokers to provide relevant underwriting expertise.

Product Development

  • Works with the Industry Ambassador and Manager to assess and formulate potential business opportunities within the industry group.

  • Works with the operating teams to formulate a plan to effectively scale and grow.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • 5+ years' experience in the insurance industry. If no insurance background, must have experience in the construction industry.

  • Working knowledge of market underwriting standards and procedures.

  • Demonstrated aptitude for computer based work management; ability to achieve expert skills in agency system software.

  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems creatively.

  • Demonstrates excellent organizational skills.

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize amongst various immediate needs.

  • Is detail-oriented.

  • Demonstrates mathematical aptitude.


  • Communication - Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Relationship Management - Ability to develop working relationships with both internal and external customers. High level of interpersonal skills to deal effectively with retailers, business owners, carrier representatives, and co-workers.

  • Flexibility - Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.


  • Handles routine office work, drives to appointments, calls on customers and vendors in business settings, and completes air travel. Job requires data entry into computers, handling files, carrying a laptop computer.


  • Demonstrate working knowledge of phone systems and basic office machinery and equipment; Microsoft Office, ConceptOne, and other agency systems as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor?s Degree or greater.

  • A valid Agent?s or Broker?s License per state requirements.

  • Must occasionally be willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends to meet business needs.
