University of Maryland, Baltimore Laboratory Research Technician in Baltimore, Maryland

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), School of Medicine - Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Research Technician. The incumbent will perform a supporting technical role in a laboratory in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology in the School of Medicine. He/She will perform basic biochemical experiments in a neuroscience laboratory with two missions: to investigate the role of peptide synthesizing enzymes in obesity; and the role of neural chaperones in amyloid plaque and protein aggregate formation in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

This is a Contractual Position

Primary Duties

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: routine recombinant DNA techniques such as plasmid purification and PCR, routine radioimmunoassays and ELISAs, routine cell culture, Western blotting, and other assays as needed.

  • May perform laboratory research activities such as: confocal microscopy techniques and recombinant protein purification.

  • May perform administrative duties such as ordering supplies.

  • Perform record keeping, i.e. document specific experiments, and compiles own research data using laboratory software applications.

  • Performs general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of general laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, etc.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:Bachelor of Sciences or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.


Preferred:Prior experience in a biomedical laboratory, preferably in cell biology or biochemistry.

Basic laboratory skills such as weighing, pipetting, and calculating molar solutions; skill in molecular biology a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Possesses a knowledge of laboratory requirements and is able to perform position in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed and ability to document all procedures in laboratory notebook. Assumes personal responsibility for experimental procedures; makes effective and timely decisions with guidance from supervisor; and learns how to effectively use technology. Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology in both oral and written communications. Skill in basic math (percentages, ratios, etc).

  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts including the ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology. Interprets and understands written information.

Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).

Salary Range:$38,204
