Primary Duties * Conduct inspections of research laboratories and animal facilities to promote compliance with applicable environmental, occupational, radiological, biological, and fire safety regulations. Compose inspection reports and deliver them to the responsible party or parties. Work cooperatively with the customer to answer questions, ensure findings are resolved, and promote a culture of safety. * Draft technical correspondence, creates educational materials, and participates in outreach campaigns to promote the health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors. * Provide hands-on training and consultation regarding environmental, occupational, biological, radiological and fire safety. Present briefings and trainings on selected topics of Environmental Health and Safety subject matter. * Utilize laboratory inspection coordination software. Provide customer assistance and training on software as a subject matter expert. Collect, sort/collate, and analyze data in the preparation of reports and recommendations to support current and future safety initiatives. * Assist in the development of procedures in technical areas such as occupational safety and health, radiation safety, biosafety, environmental compliance and fire safety. * Support research safety committees through protocol review, post approval monitoring inspections and radioactive materials inspections to ensure compliance. * Conduct accident investigations and follow up on reported safety concerns. * Participate in the response to campus emergencies involving environmental, occupational, life, fire and laboratory safety. * Other job duties as assigned. Education:Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, occupational health, health physics or other relevant science-related field. Experience:One (1) year progressive experience in hazardous materials management (which may include work in a research laboratory), occupational and life safety, environmental compliance, Biosafety or radiation safety. Special Conditions of Employment: * Physical requirements: Light to moderate physical effort is generally required. Some activities will require traversing the campus and remaining standing for long periods of time while others require being able to remain sedentary for 50% of the time. Position also requires staff to position themselves to lower levels, including crouching or kneeling to reach desired location. Occasionally ascend/descend ladders/stools. The employee must be able to carry/move/transport up to 50 pounds on occasion. * Hazardous Materials: Employee is personally responsible for following health and safety guidelines/instructions. Position will require employee to work with hazardous materials or be in areas where radiation producing equipment, radioactive materials, chemicals or infectious agents are present. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment and a respirator in certain circumstances where personal protection is determined to be needed.
