Advanced Academic Programs
The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). AAP was established in 1992 to provide students with the opportunity to obtain a master's degree in a professional and part-time graduate program. Over the course of nearly 30 years, AAP has worked diligently to add new degree programs that fit within the academic structure of the Krieger School and satisfy the demands of the marketplace. It now boasts student numbers of over 6,000 across 26 programs, with classes offered online and onsite in both Washington, D.C. and the Baltimore Homewood Campus. AAP distinguishes itself through its intensive instructional assistance, selective admissions, and dedicated full-time faculty.
Position Description:
The Johns Hopkins University invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Program Director for the Division of Computational Biology in the Center for Biotechnology Education which is housed within the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences' Advanced Academic Programs (http://advanced.jhu.edu/). We are seeking a leader and manager that will work as a team member, alongside the Program Director, to set the goals and direction of the Division, assess their implementation across two degree programs, model educational excellent through his/her/their teaching, and ensure the relevance of the curriculum and stature of the program worldwide, while promoting a welcoming and inclusive environment. This position has both academic and administrative duties, both detailed below. This position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty appointment with the academic title of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. It can be either fully remote or hybrid (a mix of online and onsite).
Academic Responsibilities:
Teaching five graduate courses per year
Engaging, advising, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds
Providing innovative leadership for curriculum design and new course development
Duties normally performed by full-time faculty, such as participating on committees, attending academic events
Administrative Responsibilities:
Assisting the Program Director in assessing the program learning outcomes of the Division's two M.S. degrees
Assisting the Program Director with overseeing faculty (full-time and adjunct) development, hiring, and evaluation
Assisting in the admissions processes, including reviewing and approving applicants
Coordinating, as needed, with faculty and student-related offices such Student Success, and Faculty Affairs
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in a life science, computer science, or engineering field with five years of experience after the degree
Five years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
The ability to teach a wide variety of courses in computational biology
Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design
Associate Program Director only - Three years of experience equivalent to the Assistant Director level
Preferred Qualifications:
Terminal Degree in life science, computer science, or engineering field
Six or more years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level
Three or more years of related professional work experience outside of academia within the ‘omics fields and/or computer science
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Experience managing a degree or certificate program
