Lake County Animal Control Officer in Baldwin, Michigan

The Lake County Sheriff's office is currently seeking applications for the position of Animal Control Officer.  This is a full time position with generous benefits including medical, dental, vision, life and short term disability insurance, paid time off, and a retirement plan with a generous County contribution.

 

This position is responsible for responding to citizen complaints regarding animals and patrolling the county to pick-up stray animals and respond to other animal related concerns. Investigates and follows up on charges of animal abuse.

 

Essential Functions

  • Responds to and investigates complaints related to stray animals, barking dogs, animal bites, dead or injured animals, livestock killings and other animal related complaints and takes action to resolve the matter. Works with owners and neighbors in the attempted resolution of animal related problems.
  • Investigates suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect, includes reviewing the condition of the animals, interviewing the owner and witnesses, and determining whether to issue a citation. Completes case reports for the Prosecutor's Office and testifies in court.
  • Patrols the county to assist in enforcing animal laws and pick-up stray animals. Uses catch poles, traps, mace and tranquilizing gun to capture and impound animals. Uses firearm to destroy animals as necessary.
  • Captures and impounds dogs and cats that have bitten individuals to quarantine them as required.
  • Informs the public on the animal control laws and ordinances and related issues.
  • Performs animal care duties such as feeding animals; cleaning and disinfecting kennel areas, vehicles and equipment; monitors sick and dangerous animals; performs euthanasia or assists with handling during euthanasia.
  • Provides on-call emergency service on evenings, weekends and holidays.

     

     

REQUIREMENTS

The qualified candidate must have good communication skills, customer oriented and have integrity.

 

Prior Law Enforcement/Animal Control experience is preferred, but NOT required. Training provided. (*Option to keep MCOLES available.)
