General Description

Two positions available based either in San Antonio, Grand Prairie, or Houston, Texas. Travel may be required at agency expense to support staffing needs during live racing season (January - November) Perform moderately complex technical program assistance work, assisting the veterinary and laboratory technician staff in the Texas Racing Commission veterinary program, which includes the operation of racetrack test barns. Work involves assisting with pre-race exams for racehorses, working with licensees, updating veterinary database records, and supervising contract personnel involved in post race urine and blood sample collection, processing, storage and shipment for animal drug testing. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions

Assists with veterinary support coordination and administrative support to carry out the agency veterinary care and drug testing program.

  • Assists with recordkeeping, chain of custody and updates to veterinary records for horses participating in training and live racing events.
  • Inspects laboratory samples and documentation. Stores and ships laboratory samples in compliance with chain of custody rules.
  • Assists in the maintenance and inventory of laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares reports, forms and documents. Maintains record keeping and filing systems.

Minimum Education And Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • At least two years of college, with course work in general business or animal science, preferred.
  • Experience working in a veterinary setting and/or working with livestock or horses, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work in a team environment in field and barn conditions.
  • Ability to implement administrative procedures and to evaluate their effectiveness; to interpret rules, policies, and procedures; to communicate effectively, to train others, and to supervise the work of others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with licensed racing participants to accomplish regulatory record keeping and meet regulatory standards.
