Burns & McDonnell Cultural Resources Intern - Environmental Service, Cultural Resources (Austin/Houston) in Austin, Texas

An Intern will work collaboratively with our teams to support a Burns & McDonnell Department, Global Practice or Regional Office. This position will provide support and assistance with requests in support of the business strategy.

Cultural Resources

Our Archaeology/History Interns are responsible for performing tasks requiring the application of standard techniques and procedures in the cultural resources management industry. Responsibilities include assisting with pre-field background research, including identifying previously recorded cultural resources and reviewing maps to assess the potential for unknown cultural resources. Interns will also gain experience performing archaeological and historic resources field surveys in a variety of locales, assisting with archaeological site recording, and documenting historic architectural resources. Interns will also assist with data and artifact analysis and preparation of deliverables such as survey reports, site forms, and desktop reviews. Previous GIS experience is a plus, but not required. Interns are expected to perform fieldwork, which could include overnight travel, walking several miles a day in varying weather and terrain, and digging shovel tests in a variety of settings. All other duties as assigned.

  • Assist with tasks that may include filing, scanning, data entry, documentation, Power Point presentation.

  • Assist with responses to general questions.

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts by collecting and analyzing data.

  • Present solutions to concerns.

  • Research solutions to project concerns; analyze and recommend solutions to problems.

  • Assist with ad hoc projects as assigned by managers.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Pursuit of Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, Geoarchaeology, Museum Studies, History, or related degree from an accredited program with at least one year of post-secondary education.

  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.

  • Prior internship and/or related archaeological/cultural resources experience preferred.

  • Actively involved in campus, community or other volunteer activities or organizations.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.

  • Ability to travel and perform archaeological field work. Must be able to walk up to 10 miles a day and dig shovel tests in a variety of settings.

  • Basic knowledge and experience in Microsoft Office programs, including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Self-motivated and eager learner, aptitude to grow and develop within the field.

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without requiring future sponsorship for employment visa status.
