JOB SUMMARY

These positions are responsible for structural design work to support Southern Company’s Transmission and Distribution Substation Design Group as well as providing support to the Transmission Line Design Group. The Engineer/Designer will produce engineering drawings, specifications, and material requirements for structural steel and concrete foundations, etc. with an emphasis on safety, quality, scheduling, and costs. These positions will require some travel (approximately 25%) and will require availability to be in the office a minimum of three days a week and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service the remainder of the week. Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Make SAFETY our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example.

  • Prepare high quality calculation and design packages needed to construct substation and transmission facilities using CAD-based tools, based on Southern Company design standards.

  • For Structural Engineer: The Engineer in the Transmission Civil Design organization will be responsible for designing and analyzing new or modified existing substation structures. The Engineer will be expected to perform reinforced concrete foundation design and structural steel analysis/design on an as needed basis. The Engineer will work with other engineers to help in their development and knowledge transfer. The Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with the civil portion of transmission substations and line projects.

  • Coordinate and communicate with other departments associated with Civil Design.

  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and Southern Company committee members to resolve standards and material issues.

  • Provide support to Constructions Services, Substation Construction, Transmission Line Construction, Field Services, Project Management and Substation Maintenance.

  • Perform site visits for projects, including pre-construction meetings, during construction and post-construction. Some overnight travel will be required.

  • Participate in design review meetings.

  • Provide work direction and oversight for designers and drafters.

  • Support Southern Company’s design criteria and standardization effort.

  • Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, setting priorities, and using effective time management and organizational skills to achieve project team goals.

  • Provide assistance as part of a storm restoration team after major storm events in the Southern Company service territory.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education :

  • For Structural Engineer :

    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.

      • BS in Civil Engineering strongly preferred.
    • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certification required.

  • For Structural Designer :

    • AutoCAD training, experience or certification is required.

    • A two-year degree from a technical school or university is preferred.

Experience:

  • For Structural Engineer :

    • Experience in industrial and/or commercial structural engineering is strongly preferred.

    • Experience in structural steel and concrete design is strongly preferred.

    • Experience with seismic, wind and vibration analysis desired.

    • Prior foundation design experience is a plus.

  • For Structural Designer :

    • 10 plus years structural steel detailing experience including commercial, industrial, stairs, handrails, etc.

    • Experience in creating substation drawings a plus.

    • Experience as a contractor or consultant to Georgia Power, Alabama Power, or Southern Company a plus.

    • Experience as a structural steel detailer and checker.

    • Experience using AutoCAD at a high level.

    • Experience talking to steel fabrication shops and answering shop problems.

    • Experience using 3D modeling software such as SDS Design Data or Tekla or similar software.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • For Structural Engineer:

    • Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes

    • Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.

    • Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design.

    • Understanding of ANSYS, MathCAD and STAAD Pro

    • Understanding of deep foundation design utilizing AllPile, LPILE, FAD Tools

    • Experience with analyzing steel connections

    • Experience in reinforced concrete design

    • Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required

  • For Structural Designer:

    • Working knowledge of AISC, ASCE, ACI codes.

    • Working knowledge of AWS welding standards.

    • Working knowledge of OSHA codes as it relates to steel design.

    • Design experience in transmission structures is a plus, but not required

    • Ability to coordinate multiple projects.

    • Experience with analyzing steel connections.

    • Experience in reinforced concrete design.

    • Manage workload of drafters.

  • General:

    • Computer skills to be proficient with standard office software applications

    • Must be a self-starter and exhibit strong problem-solving skills.

    • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral & written) and the ability to communicate technical issues simply.

    • Must work well in a team environment and have the ability to develop and build relationships at all levels. Interpersonal skills sufficient to build working relationships with peers, internal customers, and the general public.

    • Must possess effective time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
