MEAG Power Principal Accountant in Atlanta, Georgia

Position Title: Principal Accountant

Reports to: Controller/Director, Accounting & Financial Reporting

Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)

  • Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

    Summary:

    Under broad supervision, provides data and performs strategic financial analyses to support management and external customers/vendors/agencies needs. Operates with substantial latitude for unreviewed actions or decisions. Identifies problems and the resources needed to resolve them. Analyzes and recommends improvements to major systems, work processes, practices and policies

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

The scope and duties of this position may change or be temporarily altered based on the business needs of MEAG Power. General responsibilities include:

  • Prepares and analyzes accounting related schedules, statements, reports and entries in accordance with established policies and procedures. Exhibits expertise with respect to certain transactions or assets such as the Combined Cycle Plant, transmission, plant and property accounts, etc.

  • Analyzes accounting, financial and operating data to identify emerging trends or deviations from normal operations.

  • Calculates and reports on monthly status of budget and presents to appropriate parties.

  • Monitors and responds to the activities of accounting standards setting bodies, and reviews existing accounting practices and advises of any problems and recommends changes.

  • Calculates and prepares all property tax returns.

  • Prepares all entries for bond related activity and/or all entries necessary to account for the hourly energy transactions and The Energy Authority billings.

  • Documents MEAG Power’s accounting policies and procedures.

  • Continuously reviews existing accounting practices and advises of any problems or recommends changes.

  • Provides financial data for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.

  • Maintains general ledger accounts in the general ledger system, and maintains financial reports in the financial reporting system.

  • Represents the company on co-owner committees setting accounting policies for jointly owned plants and the ITS.

  • Provides supervision and training, as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree with a major in accounting, business administration or related field of study with a concentration in accounting. A combination of education and demonstrated related work experience may be substituted for a college degree.

  • A minimum of 8-10 years of related experience demonstrating a progression in responsibilities is required to perform the position’s complete responsibilities.

  • Incumbent must be able to work independently and must possess a level of expertise to carry out assigned responsbilities. Must understand and apply a comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, theories and practices normally within a specialization or with complex assignments.

  • Must have a thorough understanding of the interrelationships of the company's key business systems and processes. Must understand core buiness operations/structures and interactions among departments.

  • Has a practical understanding of utility accounting and uses sound professional judgement in making decisions necessary to attain stated objectives.

  • Communicates effectively, both written and verbal, and can effectively present findings and analyses.

  • Incumbent should have advanced skills in computer tools including Word, Excel and Access.

  • May supervise lower level employees and substitute for Manager on certain occasions.

  • CPA designation, auditing experience and/or MBA is preferred.
