Description

Establishes and directly oversees a comprehensive, diversified, and inclusive adventure program, climbing arena, equipment rental, teambuilding/challenge programs and summer camp program including, but not limited to, program management, policy development, trip planning, equipment purchasing and management, staff training, assessment, risk management, special events, budget development and oversight.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates all planning, staff supervision, training, equipment, facility upkeep and programming for the Emory Rock Climbing Arena.

  • Trains, advises and support Outdoor Emory, an active registered student organization with 600+ members.

  • Coordinates continued development of pre-Orientation trips, student trip leaders, risk management and overall management of the organization and programs.

  • Collaborates with University programs and departments as well as external partners to increase awareness and develop joint outdoor and experiential education programs, such as Women in the Wilderness, in an effort to build a sense of community around and through the Outdoor Recreation program. Liaises with other Campus entities in regards to student conduct, participation, marketing, events, etc.

  • Evaluates each aspect of the Outdoor Recreation program and compiles statistical data on participation and injuries.

  • Assists in the development of short-term and long-term goals for the outdoor recreation program with a formal assessment process.

  • Assist in attaining pertinent assessment data regarding customer satisfaction and participant & student staff learning experiences for regular analysis and annual reporting.

  • Maintains statistical data for all programs within areas of responsibility.

  • Maintains current knowledge national standards and trends in outdoor recreation, climbing/bouldering activities and summer camp programs and related challenges within Higher Education.

  • Serves as a department ranking staff member on duty for recreational programs; which includes, but is not limited to, serving as a first responder for emergency situations and providing emergency care, providing customer service, resolving conflicts and making decisions and judgments regarding program and facility usage.

  • Provides input on departmental policy decisions and strategic planning.

  • Evaluates equipment and facilities to ensure risk management and appropriate materials/procedures are utilized at all times.

  • Manages the outdoor equipment rental program, which offers a variety of equipment available for students to check out.

  • Oversees equipment inventory, including purchasing, maintenance and repair, and assessing equipment condition to ensure that equipment is clean and ready for use for all programs and rentals.

  • Develops a strategic marketing and communication plan that engages a diverse student and employee population. - Creates and revises all manuals and policies for the Outdoor Recreation program and Emory Rock Climbing Arena.

  • Serves in an on-call function to support recreation facilities and programs.

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates and develops 50+ student employees annually for operations, teambuilding/challenge facilitators, climbing wall attendants and trip leaders.

  • Organizes and conducts meetings and training sessions each semester and as needed.

  • Instructs a for-credit physical education class within the general education requirement curriculum.

  • Creates opportunities for experiential learning and transferable skill development for student employees and participants alike.

  • Provides leadership and guidance to Outdoor Emory student organization and student leaders.

  • Maintains files documenting training, timekeeping and certifications as required.

  • Serves as the primary Risk Manager for all Outdoor Recreation programs and Emory Rock Climbing Arena related issues.

  • Develops and evaluates comprehensive risk management policies, procedures and guidelines for all Outdoor Recreation programs, the Emory Rock Climbing Arena facility and internal summer camp programs.

  • Ensures risk management guidelines are in line with industry standards, departmental plans and the University's risk management policies and procedures. - Instructs CPR/AED/First Aid courses for internal student and professional staff to ensure policy compliance.

  • Serves as the liaison to Athletics and Recreation Facilities & Operations staff and Emory Facilities Management.

  • Assists with informal recreation operations and drop in recreation patrons.

  • Serves as the Co-Director for the Emory Sports Fitness Camp, an on-campus Summer day camp for children.

  • Assists in the development and management of an internal summer camp program which includes, but is not limited to, recruitment and hiring of camp counselors, staff, and volunteers; training of camp counselors and support staff; researching grant opportunities, funding applications, and coordinating grant compliance; evaluation of camp counselors; developing effective written programs and learning outcomes of the camp's daily activities; and record keeping and assessment of the overall program.

  • Works with staff, campus partners and local businesses to develop a summer outdoor education day camp program separate from Emory Sports Fitness Camp consistent with the needs and interests of the Emory community.

  • Maintains active membership in a variety of on-campus, divisional, national, and local committees, including the NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation and/or Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education (AORE).

  • Serves on at least one committee, project team, or program within the University Community. - Publication in professional journals, conference presentations and/or representation in other Higher Education associations.

  • Promotes and travels on domestic and international outdoor adventure trips to foster student development, develop relationships with alumni, serve on committees and supervise student staff and participants.

  • Assists in development of alumni relations and fundraising events. Seeks external partnerships and sponsors to enhance the Outdoor Recreation program.

  • Prepares, forecasts, and monitors budgets as it relates to the four areas of the Outdoor Recreation program.

  • Maintains records of program participation, revenue generation, and expenditures. Consistently monitors all revenue and expense budgets.

  • Monitors and maintains records of all Outdoor Recreation and Emory Rock Climbing Arena equipment including: verifying insurance coverage as required and coordinate equipment purchases/replacements.

  • Conducts and audits all payroll procedures for up to 50+ student employees.

  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree in sports management, physical education, recreation/leisure administration, education, or related field, and two years of related experience in the outdoor industry, preferably within a collegiate recreation program.

  • Wilderness First Aid certification. CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.

  • A master's degree is preferred.

NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
