The Lead Network Engineer is a central university office position responsible for senior-level design and management of the companies' LAN/WAN environment and computer systems. This includes participation and oversight of daily upkeep and administration of the companies' network infrastructure and computer systems. This position will also be responsible for the design, planning, implementation, troubleshooting and maintenance of the companies' network infrastructure and architecture. He/she has the aptitude to perform troubleshooting, testing, scripting and coding and demonstrates leadership and mentoring of less-experienced engineers.The Lead Network Engineer must be able to research, implement, create, administer, and modify custom network services monitoring and management applications across a wide array of server and service technologies in order to fulfill the business requirements.
The Lead Network Engineer reports to the Network Services Build Manager, Network Services.
Master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Ten (10) years of relevant Senior Engineering experience with servers and networks
CCNP certification is required
Strong routing and switching background with strong working knowledge of wireless and Security.
Experience with L2/L3 High availability mechanisms including stateful HA i.e. NAT, Firewall, VPN, HSRP, track, VRRP, STP, ECMP, etc.
Good working experience with network packet analyzer/sniffers or related tools.
Linux OS’s and Linux CLI (ssh/scp/rsync/tar/chmod/chown/bash/REGEX/etc.) i.e. Linux power user.
General network OS CLI power user – IOS, NX-OS, IOS-XE
Practical knowledge of one or more coding/scripting languages – bash, tcl/tk, python, perl, php, C, etc.
Excellent working knowledge of BGP, OSPF
Good working knowledge of DHCP, internet DNS, ISC BIND/DHCP, (infoblox preferred)
Good familiarity with enterprise VoIP systems including dual mode ports and phone boot process.
JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a central university office position Responsible for maintaining voice, data and wireless network connectivity for the Emory Enterprise. Conducts job surveys to determine equipment, network functionality, and vendor support requirements.
Evaluates applications and determines configuration, provisioning, and installation requirements to ensure service level expectations are met. Responds to incident and service request tickets and provides 24 x 7 on-call support to resolve issues and restore service. Manages the edge network to facilitate growth through monitoring of network performance and capacity requirements. Provides technical support for internal and external projects to ensure seamless network installations and upgrades. Acts as a network resource for enterprise-wide technical support. Serves as a mentor and technical resource for other team members to broaden the team's knowledge base and develop skills.
Documents and diagrams engineered solutions to ensure records of work performed are maintained. Interacts with PMs to understand projects' scopes of work and to oversee infrastructure designs. Designs project network and obtains equipment quotes to deliver network and equipment cost estimates to project teams. Reviews vendor equipment specifications to ensure proper functionality and to maintain Emory network standards. Procures equipment, requests subnets and reviews network configurations to prepare for installations. Reviews upgrades and installs to ensure activity details are accurately recorded. Installs, verifies and tests equipment to ensure network designs are successful. Coordinates meetings and communication to update customers, vendors and UTS management on network issues. Updates system documentation to provide up-to-date information on network infrastructure designs.
Performs network equipment installations and configurations to ensure performance and service standards and expectations are met. Provides network expertise to respond to 24 x 7 issues and to meet service level expectations. Manages IT Service Management system to ensure problem resolution, develop communications and to meet service level expectations. Arranges training solutions to transfer knowledge and to keep team members current with technologies. Mentors and coaches team members to provide cross-training, technical guidance and skills enhancement. Performs related responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree in IT or related field and three years of relevant IT experience in network engineering, PC hardware support, network server administration, voice technology engineering, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Valid State of Georgia Driver's license and insurable driving record.
Designs and system implementation Design, plans, test, install, and maintain tightly integrated, flexible and highly complex voice, data and transport systems. Test and evaluate new hardware and software at the enterprise level. Provide solutions architecture for OSI model layers. Interact with network security analysts to reconfigure and update security policies and increase optimization and efficiencies. Test new designs and communications protocols in the lab to determine viability. Provide network architecture technical assistance and recommendations to ensure successful application implementations. Problem solving Manage complex enterprise infrastructure projects and provide technical leadership to cross-departmental service strategies for internet working technologies and associated systems. Perform highly technical inspections of network protocols, packets, and layers to resolve key network and mission-critical application production issues. Interact as an Information Technology (SME) to provide direction for complex system and the problem when they have trouble, create documentation to direct the run team members when troubleshooting the enterprise. Collaborates with others for active maintenance and future growth Interact with department managers, directors, and Information Technology (IT) peers to assist with service strategy development. Meet with architecture management and team members to identify new and evolving enterprise needs. Act as LITS Technical Review Team member to consult with enterprise users on new applications architecture and designs. Act as an architecture SME to provide project technical leadership and to establish enterprise-wide relationships. Access vendors products and documentation to understand the products capabilities, and be able to parse the information for internal consumption for vetting purposes. Sets policies, guidelines and best practices for active maintenance and future growth Investigate and recommend new technologies that will serve the Emory Enterprise's demands for improvement. Support continual service improvement to maximize planning for meeting future business needs. Champion along with the Network Architect new cutting edge IT Service architectural advances, that provide extensive value for the University and Health care stakeholders. Stay abreast of application system trends to design network architecture for replacing obsolete systems and improving network efficiencies.
