Job Summary

Acuity Brands has established the Intelligent Spaces Group (ISG) to tackle problems within the built environment. The built environment is responsible for 40% of the world's greenhouse gases and we are creating solutions that will make buildings Smarter, Safer, and Greener. ISG is seeking a Director of Software Engineering to join our Atrius software leadership team in the growth of our Internet of Things (IoT) driven applications. This position’s full-stack team is focused on the development of cloud tools that provide our customers centralized monitoring and control of their built space. As the Director of this team, you will bring your passion for developing engineering teams so that they are capable of building elegant, reliable, and maintainable systems to help us design, deploy, scale, and maintain highly available distributed cloud applications that support our customers’ building management goals. You will also be responsible for working with other software leaders, contributing directly to overall product design and technical architecture; you will work in close collaboration and open communication across functional boundaries throughout the growing ISG organization. Key Tasks & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

The Director of Software Engineering is a key leadership role and an opportunity to apply your unique combination of technical skills and people skills to customer-facing products and services. While doing so, you will work with a broad array of technology and business experts to leave a lasting impact on our customer’s sustainability, building operations, and business intelligence initiatives. In addition, you will leverage your skills as a leader and a mentor to develop the software engineers you work with.

Your Responsibilities :

  • Develop, mentor, and coach the engineers on your team so that they can achieve their career goals and work in a positive, inspiring environment

  • Drive continuous improvement by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity

  • Use a data-driven approach to improve team effectiveness

  • Ensure we develop high-quality, maintainable software in a collaborative environment

  • Work across development team boundaries to enable best practices for planning, development, deployment and management of cloud-based systems and applications

  • Work with our Quality Assurance team on automation and test planning

  • Work with our SRE and DevOps teams on automated pipelines and observability

  • Work with our Product team to ensure our products enable our customers to think Smarter, Safer, and Greener about their environment

Skills and Minimum Experience Required

  • A love of learning about technology

  • 10+ years of programming experience in any modern programming language

  • 5+ years managing Scrum teams and developing engineers

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A track record of demonstrating leadership for a team of software engineers in developing applications that effectively address customers' problems

  • Experience with Agile Methodologies such as Scrum - you’ve been on teams that practice Agile, and you understand why it’s beneficial

  • Solid understanding of application lifecycle management (ALM) in a cloud-native context leveraging infrastructure-as-code principles

  • Experience building cloud applications that are continuously deployed

  • Experience with CI / CD pipelines and GitOps tools / frameworks

  • Experience with Test Driven Development (TDD) and microservice testing best practices

  • Experience with monitoring platforms (Datadog, Prometheus, Splunk, etc.)

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Kubernetes, AKS, etc.)

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • A commitment to lifelong growth, improvement, and learning

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • A passion for sustaining the environment

  • A passion for helping and developing others

  • Experience building and leading high-performance, distributed teams

  • Experience with team-level project management and Agile/Scrum processes

  • Experience with building-science concepts

  • Experience deploying or operating cloud solutions (Microsoft Azure preferred)

The range for this position is $182,300.00 to $328,200.00. Placement within this range may vary, depending on the applicant’s experience and geographic location.
